  • Radar/Laser Detectors... Worth it?

    Hi guys,

I have been debating if I should get one of those Escort 9500xi (or ix), it's the top of the line detectors out there. JBS wants $699 for it.

    Worth the money?

Consider these guys. I liked them. Got mine here. I believe they are an authorised dealer, so you wouldn't have warranty issues or anything if something went wrong. The deal depends on where our dollar is at, but prices are usually pretty good.

        Re: Radar/Laser Detectors... Worth it?

Radar detectors are nice, but I am not to sure how effective they are anymore. Most of my tickets in recent memory have been due to lasers, not radar. In my opinion you could get away with a lower end radar detector and save the cash for a laser jammer.

That being said I have the Escort 8500 x50, and it works great.

The one major advantage I see with the Valentine is that it has arrows to show you where the signal is coming from.

I would have bought the Valentine, but I was too cheap/too impulsive to wait for delivery.

          valentine1 or nothing at all.

In the city having a jammer or detector for laser wont be a huge help. They will pull you over regardless if it looks like you are speeding.

On the highway though cops in AB are still big on radar, and the Valentine1 has unbelievable range detection. Mine has paid for itself hundreds of times over. I feel almost naked driving without it

In the city yes, detectors are not as useful except for intersection radar and multinova vans......Outside the city though mine has paid for itself numerous times, I get great long warning on RCMP and sherriff's cruising the roads....Thats where its most important anyhow

^^agreed...I have a V1 and it has paid for itself already. Like stated though, it is really only effective outside of the city.

Was reading up on the new passport 9500ix, and it actually gets better reviews and has more tech features then the V1. The V1 still has the longest X band range, but the 9500ix almost doubles the V1 range in every other band and it has GPS which will "remember" marked spots where cops sit as well as tells you your speed etc......... however it's like $150 more then the V1 which makes it a little hard to swallow.

are they still good for ripping around on highways/backroads an oncoming cop is say a mile coming towards you?

or if your going through a construction zone say highway2/stoney and they sit there with the gun all the time.. i never speed through here its just dumb too.. too many cops and your just asking for it

I have x band disabled on mine. Never had it come on for anything useful. 99% of my false beeps were on x band, and apparently x band is nearly phased out.

V1's big feature is knowing what direction the signal is coming from. The actual detection ability is matched or beaten by a few other brands.

Escort/beltronics/valantine are probably the only ones worth looking at at any rate. Escort and Beltronics are together now (still sell products under separate names), but i'd imagine they share technology.

I don't think much has changed in the radar game for years. V1 is still the preferred choice because of it's reliability and sensitivity. It's the technique in which they catch you that has changed. Now they just sit with their guns off and wait till they visually catch u speeding, then hit you. Your V1/escort/etc will go off, but it's too late by then.

                            Long live jammers!

jamming a radar gun is extremely illegal. detectors are fine for radar, but jamming has always and will always be a no-no
