Re: building permit
Ha Ha!!! Have fun with that. I went down to the city probably 3 times to get a permit for my garage. Everyone I spoke with had different ideas and answers to the same question. I seriously left there thinking to myself, "what the **** just happened?". Very frustrating to say the least. Hope you have better luck!Derek

Re: building permit
the only issue you will run into is when you go to sell.
One of the questions I have to ask is are you aware of any lack of permits. If you lie and the new home owners catch on your screwed. If you say yes, it is required to pass that information onto any potential buyers.

Re: building permit
At the least you need a permit for structure and electrical. Yes you have to do downtown and it is a little bit of a hassle but it is something you HAVE to do. If you reno your basement without a permit and say start a fire while doing it or after it is done your insurance will likely not cover you. Also like said when you go to sell it is also a major pain, as the previous owners of this house found out not pulling permits costs you a lot of money when selling (and I had to rip out all the crappy assed work and he was a contractor).Name: Brent

Listen to this man, it can be a lot more costly down the road if you don't do it. Remember even after you sell the house if something catastrophic happens god forbid like a fire breaking out and someone couldn't get out a bedroom window in the basement because it didn't meet code for proper sizing and or window type then you could be held responsible for their death.
Just go on the City website study up what you are required to have and go there early in the morning as they have no problem turning you away if there is something you forgot or is incomplete or they just plain don't like the looks of you, sad but true. No soup for you, back of line!!2002 996TT

Re: building permit
print the requirement list off... http://www.calgary.ca/portal/server....+Brochures.htm ... make sure you have all the required items listed... including additional forms, fee, number of plans etc.
Monday mornings are usually the busiest... but its really a crap shoot... if you plan to show up at city hall for 7:45 am, doors open at 8 am (might want to call a double check the opening time), you'll most likely only have to wait 15 mins or so, or not at all.
sucks, yes, but like others have said in the long run a good idea.
