  • Wine Drinkers?

Thanks to the down turn in the economy I ended up taking a job with a online wine distributor in Calgary doing some minor customization of the software they use.

It’s a unique opportunity that I would have passed up a few years ago to work in the energy sector. I have started to develop a real liking for some of the wines compared to the stuff I drank well in university haha. I am sure we have a few wine fans on the board, any recommendations?

After visiting Argentina I have started to love Malbecs... for the most part they are under the $25 range and excellent!!

Garnacha wines are delicious as well.

I like a good box wine. Sitting there on my refrigerator shelf... a full glass is just a squeeze of the nozzle away.

Osoyoos Larose is nice if you can find it. (Canadian)
Joseph Drouhin has a few reds I dig. (French)
I'm more in to reds. For whites I don't mind gewurztraminers and reislings. Tinhorn Creek has a nice gewurz'. I like Sumac Ridge's too.

There are so many good wines.. sometimes just picking stuff you know nothing about gets good results too.

I've probably tried more canadian wines than anything.

Fun to grab 2 bottles from 2 vintages. The liquor store by me doesn't rotate stock much, so you can get a bottle a year older at the back of the row sometimes. Often a huge difference from year to year. Can be really disappointing when you find a wine you like, then next year it tastes different!

On the other hand... with 2 kids now, and a job that is slow as all hell, the wine budget has diminished significantly. :(

If you want a bit of a fun wine try literally any of Dan Akroyd's six wines.

If you like Argentina wines you would enjoy this

I have really enjoyed Pinot Noir and Napa Valley wines the last few weeks, a great Pinot Noir is one called Craggy Range.

Da Vinci Chianti 2003 and 2005 - great wine and priced very reasonably ($~16)

It's getting tricky to find the 2003 but if you can, it's even better than the '05.

Canadian wines are good... but overpriced for relatively young un-established wineries... Old World my friend! France and Italy is were its at, a huge array of approachable wines under $25... or much more if you choose. (don't get me wrong l support Canadian Wineries fully... but the prices keep climbing mostly because of tourism, $25 for a Mission Hill Merlot, mediocre at best... or you can spend $25 for a Nicolas Potel Pinot Noir (france)... no comparison)

Take a trip to J. Webb in glenmore landing, they'll school you a little and direct you down the path to the Old World taste.
