Last summer, I went for a drive and realized that I couldn't keep up with my friends so I decided it was time for a new car...Recession hits....errr, better hold off. I started looking at my options with my current ride: Horsepower Freaks Turbo kit, Active Autowerke Supercharger, VF-Engineering Supercharger, ESS Supercharger, Dinan Supercharger, etc. Ended up deciding that a VF-Engineering kit would best suit my needs. I've been around the car scene long enough to see and deal all the ******** that comes along with modifying cars. I had a very jaded opinion about our selection of local shops and tuners.

Now prior to dealing with Alex, I didn't know the guy. He's not a buddy who I'm giving free exposure to nor did he ask me to write this review.

I meet Alex at a car meet. He was a nice enough person, he gave me his card and we talked for a bit. I mentioned I was interested in a VF-E kit and he proceeded to show me the VF-E kit on his E36. He told me he had experience building boosted bimmers and he could install/service any kit. This peaked my interest but I was still very skeptical. I decided to keep him in the back of my mind, as an option.
I spoke with a few reputable shops and no one else really had much experience but were very eager to tackle my build. I eventually contacted VF-Engineering to order my kit and I mentioned I would be getting it professionally installed. They advised I should contact Alex at Velocity Motorsport for the install, because he’s actually the local authorized VF-E distributor. Makes sense...maybe I'll research this guy!

So I creeped his posts on a bunch of BMW related forums and found a significant amount of his posts helping random people diagnosing problems. I couldn't find any bad feedback so I decided to him a shot. I contacted VF-E and told them to ship the kit to Velocity. Then I contacted Alex and told him in a very blunt manner "I'm not buying the kit from you, I'd rather buy it directly from VF-E but you can do the install, so it's going to be shipped to you." In hindsight, this was pretty rude on my part but that's just how the situation played out.

    Install

From the moment the kit arrived, he documented every detail of the install with pictures and constant email updates to my phone. From unpacking the kits contents, to fixing problems he encountered on the way. I did not once ask him to do this but I found it very professional that he would keep me informed to exactly what was going on. One day, I was in the neighborhood and I dropped in for a surprise visit to check on the progress.

He took the time to chat with me and explain exactly what he was doing. I noticed that he had used many small plastic bags covering up various engine components so they wouldn’t be dirtied during the install. He informed me of some small issues he found like missing clips, stripped screws, and improperly installed parts (Thanks Calgary BMW Gallery!). He corrected the mistakes even though they didn’t even pertain to the Supercharger install and replaced all the lost clips for me. His work was ridiculously meticulous, he strived to make all modified pieces look and fit like OEM.

The install was completed without a hiccup and in a very reasonable amount of time. I even dropped by with several random parts he also installed for me. I know a few of them took several hours and required custom modifying for them to fit. I was very impressed by his work and attention to detail. When it came time to settle the bill, I was expecting to pay a lot because of the caliber of work, effort, and extra time he put in. I was shocked when he only asked for the set amount we agreed upon for the supercharger install. In fact, he even helped me sell a few of my old parts I no longer had use for.

    Install Pt.2

I was so impressed with my experience that I went back to him for the rest of my build. He installed everything from CF door handles, to Laser Jammers, to maintenance items like ignition coils for me. Everything was done with the same precision as with the supercharger install. Even purchased a few suspension components from him and he found numerous ways to save me time and money. He spent his evenings, weekends, and most of his free time working on my car. He once even asked if I would mind him taking a night off, I told him “No, you may not.” Just kidding…
Once my significant list of tasks was completed, I went to pick up my car. He had even given my car a quick detail including under the hood. Everything was as it should be and he contacted me the next day to make sure everything was satisfactory.

    Dyno Day

I invited Alex to come hang out and watch me Dyno my car last weekend. I could tell that he was busy because he's currently in the middle of another (crazy) project. He had to drive back and forth around the city getting custom parts fabricated plus his girl was also with him. But he made time out of his day to be there for me.
When it was my turn to hit the dyno, he helped me out tonnes. He was very protective of my car since we had just watched one of the dyno operators mess up a suspension sensor on my friend’s SL63. Alex himself ended up prepping my car for the dyno, and he also helped another random supercharged M3 get ready. Everyone was commenting on how I had brought my own pit mechanic, some jokingly asked him how much I was paying him per hour to be there.

I ended up pulling 476rwhp, which is exactly 580hp according to the Horsepower Freaks Conversion. My A/F’s were pretty rich and very safe as well. The first person I congratulated after my run was Alex because he had such a major role in the results.

He is genuinely enthusiastic about what he does and takes a lot of pride in his work. He went above and beyond his duty for me and I know he does the same for all his customers. I’d highly recommend him to anyone with a BMW looking for performance work in Edmonton.
