Re: Obama - overall fuel economy to 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016

I agree with u Ryan no one wants to see the fast cars go away. But if u could build a 3 cylinder car that was faster then a 135 for eg.. Thus using less fuel, why would that not be ok.. Does anyone really care whats under the hood... If its fast its fast....

And if your thinkng that to build a engine that is smaller lighter and uses less fuel with more power then what we all drive now is something from the space channel then that is probley what they said 20 years ago when someone said that a 4cyl fuel injected could make 300+ hp..

In my opinion we are behind the times on engines... Like i said earlier.. If then can send people to mars im sure they can build an engine that makes huge power with less fuel or no fuel at all.. ........

i'm all for better mileage cars.. i just don't want them to kill fun perfomance cars like S4,M3, 135, 335, porsche, etc

You don't need big engines to have fun. The lotus Elise has a 1.8L and it can keep up with cars that are way more powerful on a road course.

Power to weight is the key. If manufacturers can build light weight cars without the Lotus price tag, we can still have fun.

Be aware that the CAFE standard is still the old old MPG standard, NOT the one they use on the window sticker.

I think someone posted the equivalent sticker/real MPG (US) is about 26. So the current i4 accord, my 1.8T 02 Jetta etc already hit the Obama numbers. Not that hard. Europe will have targets even 25% harder to hit by 2016.

MPG #'s that are on window stickers in North America are ALL posted from tests preformed in California at sea level....... We don't get the same results in Calgary, I wonder where the Average "standard" will come from, cause a car that gets 35mpg in Cali will be closer to 28mpg in calgary.......

k this is a odd question but what MPG rating do they us

              US or imperial?

i've done online calculators vs manufactuer claims and the manufactuers seem to be using imperial

              is that right?

if so my avg s4 is 9.9l/100km which is 28MPG imperial but only 23.7 (US liquid gallon)

no clue which one is right but 28mpg makes me happy hahaha

I'd honestly say I'm luck to get 28 MPG on the highway …

In the city it's probably 21 - 23. If you really hammer it down probably only 19 or so in the city.

what about imperial vs US gallon.. i'm confused there now

i think the ratings are imperial

                    FWIW i drive my S4 98.5% highway
                    it really never sees stop/go

Daimler already picked up 10% of Tesla just recently.

Daimler is the parent of Mercedes Benz, they did own Chrysler when the 300s and stuff came out but they got rid of that a little while back before it became totally worthless.

Interesting. The problem being is that you can't compare the EU to NA.

We are just to different. You are simply not going to convince a very large chunk of the market to buy small.

What will happen instead is people will just begin to fix up their old ****. Suddenly a huge spike in the number of 1970 pick-ups will be on the road. Because they won't be able to afford this outrageous tax on vehicles that they might need and have had forever.

The amount of CO2 that a car produces compared to the damage done by Methane from cows is laughable.
