  • Obama - overall fuel economy to 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016

    any else catch this?

"Under a plan announced this week, the [Obama] administration intends to impose rules mandating that U.S. car makers raise overall fuel economy to 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016, up from about 25 mpg." "The new rules would require passenger cars sold in the U.S. to get, on average, 39 miles per gallon by 2016. Light trucks would have to average 30 mpg. That's a dramatic rise from current averages -- 27.5 mpg for cars, 23 mpg for trucks -- and would bring the overall average of vehicles to 35.5 mpg by 2016 -- four years earlier than current federal law requires."

looks like we'll all be driving 1.4L twin turbos soon!

cant help thinking its gonna put even more pressure on the domestic automakers. No more fancy SUV's running around ! 6 years is very soon and is typically a VW model life??

I am all for it...There are lots of current decent small cars that easy get well into the 40 mpg rate (and they are Canadian gallons). If car maker are still selling mid sized cars that only get 25 mpg they deserve to get left in the dust.

          its a crock of ****

so that means no more performance cars then?? or do you just pay a bigger gas guzzler tax then??

you can't pull trucks out of NA.. maybe in the citys but the reason people own them here is for hauling trailers for camping

central ab is FULL of trucks because its all oil patch workers.. makes sense..

          i hate the govt.

I'm cool with it. Yeah it screws car enthusiasts, but I think it will benefit the greater society.

I'm concerned what the world will look like for my grandchildren if we continue to pollute the way we currently do.

i'm not.. global warming isn't caused by cars!! a freaking volcano that explodes causes more C02 than cars globally do!

the climate change is due to the earth evolving..

this is a super good thing for tuners . it will mean slowly phasing out 87 and 89 octane . and we will start seeing higher octane at the pump . becuase these engines will need incredibly high compression to provide that effeciency . it will be good

I see this as a good thing in a way too.... If they can send ships to Mars they can make a 500Hp monster burn less fuel.....

Why wait 6 year.... It should be happening now.... and if you tell me We dont have the means to do it il just push the BUll Shi t Button

we can do it, they already do it in the EU. NA just cant get over the idea that its a citizens right to have a V8 instead of a four cyl 1.6. theyll probably introduce pollution tax on vehicles after this where you have to pay to own a larger vehicle just like the EU do as well

There could be a lot of people fixing up old performance cars down the road...

Porsche should be safe without going to a 1.4L turbo guys.

                              Maybe they should.

What are Lambo's good for???? Going fast, looking good, and helping dudes get laid. Very few actually use these vehicles to their full potential (track).

Lets be honest, does anyone really need a 500hp vehicle for daily driving?

What is a Hummer good for???? Helping douche bags look like they are gangster. Very few people who own Hummers rarely have more than one passenger, never tow anything, or take them offroading.

At the end of the day, these are un-practical cars that are designed for a small segment of society. If you want to spend that kind of money on a car like that, go ahead; but I don't see a problem with taxing such vehicles.
