Re: Obama - overall fuel economy to 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016

Is this to tighten up emmissions? or is it so we aren't using as much fuel overall?

I know from work with the trucking industry they have gotten so strict that new trucks emmisions are so clean that its like 30 new trucks are equal to 1 older truck that has really nothing for emissions(ie. exhaust gas rescirculation and dpf's ) The old mechanicals where they would just crank up the fuel and really had nothing to burn up the excess fuel and soot like the new trucks do.

I don't see this in awhole having an overall effect. If they are so worried why don't they build a car that doesn't run on petroleum, one that isn't hard on the environment or use natural fuel?

    Interesting topic.

You do know it is 35mpg averaged over every car that the manufacture offers right?

they already do tax bigger cars.......... the tundra, tacoma, sequoia, 4runner all get a $1000 addition embedded in the price tag while, corolla, prius, and any highbrid get a $1000 credit........

Ryan, eventually everything will be hybrid-gas or hybrid-diesel.......... hybrids have pretty much unlimited torque. we got a memo saying Toyota is working on a hybrid engine for the Tundra which they are shooting for 550-600hp and over 800 torque which will also be able to tow over 18k. (and well past the 35mpg limit). It won't be out for years but they are coming

really?? well if they can make engines with 350+ that can do that MPG i'm all for it

actually i had a b8 a4 2.0t for a day and that thing doing 130k on the highway was getting 3.5l/100km which is like 55-60mpg!! i was like WHOA!!!

very impressed with that engine. 2.0t TFSI

what a lot of ppl don't know is the energy wasted by low octane fuels and poor materials and engine design . in low octane engines, too much fuel is wasted under high load (i.e. wot) for cooling . this compensates for the cheap metals used in their engines .

also, cheap engines and low end cars don't have the largest budgets for effeciency . also, their budgets don't allow for very smart/experienced design engineers . so the vehicles suffer from high energy waste .

you know the story behind forced induction during ww2 and their fuel crisis ? if manufactures stuck to making high performance forced induction engines then the we'd see a huge increase in power and fuel economy .

for example, my 370 hp svt focus has better highway fuel economy then it did when it was stock . that's due to making the engine (which is just a pump) more effecient . but since i tune and built the car myself, i know why it makes more power over the stock configuration .

anyway, yah if manufacturers start making some wicked power within reasonable static displacement then we'd see some wicked milleage

While it is an average of the manufacturers fleet it is still a direct effect over all the vehicles, but it does mean there would be room for a slightly less efficient high performing model of an otherwise conforming car.

                Average passenger car 39mpg!

"The new rules would require passenger cars sold in the U.S. to get, on average, 39 miles per gallon by 2016. Light trucks would have to average 30 mpg. That's a dramatic rise from current averages -- 27.5 mpg for cars, 23 mpg for trucks -- and would bring the overall average of vehicles to 35.5 mpg by 2016

                  fine by me.

For a DD to commute in the city their should be stricter laws. A bit to much freedom, with the types of cars rolling around.

I think its a good idea. American Car manufacturers have been lagging behind big time.

ok can everyone calculate thier average MPG then speak your mind on this subject

unless your a TDI'er i bet everyone here gets under 30 for mixed driving

i get 24-25 mixed and i drive like a pussy

so calculater your mileage... post it on here.. accept that your car doesn't get 35.5 then imagine how much you love your car and if you were to buy it brand new it may not be available as it doesn't meet the requirements. sad day

In all honesty I don't want to know that double digit number.

The way i drive .... I dont want to know.... Hehe

I took a drive to canmore last week, and i was getting about 8 leters for every hundred... I was hitting it a bit thow on the way there.. Cost me about 20$$$ there and back

The way i see it is, i could care less about fuel consumption, my problem is car companies are holding back on creating even better cars, that can produce more power, and burn way cleaner.

OK.. now thing about how much you love your car.. what it currently does for mileage and how sad you'd be if you wanted to buy it off the showroom floor in its current MPG state.

no more 135 for you freddy.. time to cry

now tell obama and the government to suck it and you'll agree with me

i'm all for better mileage cars.. i just don't want them to kill fun perfomance cars like S4,M3, 135, 335, porsche, etc

In my GTI i get between 28 to 31mpg depending how i drive it. to make that up to a conforming value shouldnt be too hard for a good company.
