Were you looking at online stickers or in the dealer? My legacy wagon had a 5K rebate if you financed through the bank on top of the sale price being offered. G8 v6s have HUGE discounts so any domestic you should see what's on the floor.

My mk4 with the smallest legal rear facing child seat we could find forced the front seat 2 clicks from the very front. Even in the new 08 legacy I'm not as far back as I would prefer and you know I'm not a tall guy.

After looking at every car at the car show, the other dealer I'd hit up would be a ford dealer. The focus and 500 are pretty impressive and the value for $ is huge. Remember this is going to get puked and crapped on and scratched with strollers and high chairs etc.

Oh and a new Sonata is a huge value as well.

Re: Sentra.....I had one as a rental car last year (I think it was a 2007 model). I found the car very cheap and plastic. The power was very low and the auto tranny was always shifting gears. I am sure that the rental car version is the basic stripped down model and one that a person might buy would have a few more features but I was not impressed with the car at all.

We test drove the se-r which shares the same cheap plastics but has the cvt transmission (you dont feel any gear shifts) more power, beefier suspension, etc. I dunno for the money it seemed not too bad. We'll have to check out the altimas.

Might even want to consider going to a diesel seeing as diesel prices are 67 cents/L and you get 1000+km/tank.

                Re: New car options

I was in a similar situation shortly before Christmas.

We wanted a new vehicle, since my Wife's car was dying - and we wanted something reliable, good on gas, and something we could use for small kids (not yet, but hopefully within a few years).

                - We looked at the Rabbit - but it was a little too small and I preferred AWD for my wife.
                - Civic - Good everyday car, but I'm not a fan of the new spaceship interior.
                - Mitsu Outlander - Build quality was awful.
                - 2006-2007 Audi A4 - Was my choice, but was simply to expensive.

We ended up going with a Nissan Rogue, and both of us love it. It's AWD, so I feel safe having my wife drive it in the winter, and it's great on gas.

I actually never even included the B200 in the equation. Based on what Kris mentioned, it's a lot cheaper than I thought, and probably a great car. With that said my brother has had bad luck with his C230, and I'm not a huge fan of the looks.

I ended up using CarCostCanada and finding out the base price of the car, and simply offering the dealer a few hundred bucks more. It saved us a few grand right off the bat.

Price out some wiper blades..for what ever model you are buying.
that will give you an idea on any service costs down the road.
you will be very surprised how accurate this is.

My wife and I just bought a Forester non turbo for her. Considered Rav4, CRV. Forester was most car like to drive had best visibility, best AWD, lots of room and biggest sunroof
Also it was the cheapest and had all the options we wanted even on the base models. The only thing is the auto transmission could be better but that's not a deal breaker.

I know I don't have kids or anything but seems nuts to me to think you need a midsize wagon/SUV to accommodate a family and all the associated stuff these days. I am all for keeping kids as safe as possible but seems there is a lot of overkill on what some people use, I have seen some strollers larger than my car!

I need to do some research in Europe for when I have a family as they seem to do it a bit smaller for sure!

Back to the subject at hand, a G8 is a minimum 6500 off these days, so some crazy deals if you can get past owing a domestic with bankruptcy looming as they can be had in the mid 20s for a V6 model.

I thought the same way too. To me the gti was huge inside. But once we tried to put a baby seat in it, it becomes clear it's a compact car. It would work just fine but the Forester is much bigger inside awd, higher meaning easier loading, bigger trunk, cheaper than gti and more fuel efficient

This way I can have the gti all to myself

I actually agree for the most part - but having the extra space does help to a degree. I couldn't see the need for something obscene like the ford flex or large SUV - but we chose what we did because of skiing trips, roadtrips, kids, etc.

When we were in Europe it seemed people just lived a much more sustainable lifestyle. They owned less, and didn't feel the need to drag along everything under the sun everytime they go on a trip. Just drive through the burbs here and see how much "stuff" people have their garage. We easily fit two cars in our garage, but the people across the street don't even have room for one - it's basically a giant storage room.

Ha my friend who moved here from england has owned nothing but full size trucks/suvs since day one in canada. When I asked why the big vehicles (at the time he had no kids) his answer was "because I can". Fuel was cheap and roadways here favour large vehicles.

I like the new forester and it seems to have good reviews from the mags. Might have to test drive one this weekend.

Ask them for an extended test drive. I got a 24 hour test drive on it and Rav4 and you get a way better feel for the vehicle than you do on a normal 20 min test drive.

Blame the certifications for child seats. They are HUGE compared to even 10 years ago let alone the little cardboard seats we grew up with (or that Europe allows)

A Mk4 Jetta has the seat pretty much ALL THE WAY FORWARD to accomodate a rear facer. Think about that and how much that sucks for a year or more.

The only time I find the wagon space more useful is when we go car camping - the Jetta trunk is huge enough for anything else (assuming you can get it in the opening). And we're planning on towing a tent trailer (again, try and compare tow ratings here vs Europe - it's crazy)
