  • Quick Question

So I finally booked my road test to get the class 7 licence, or class 5 w/e. Right now I have the GDL license. The appointment is for next Sat. any thing i should know about it? They said it's an HR long. My car's manual too so do they expect you to have both hands on the wheel? So yea....that's my question, reply with any pointers or tips you got for me because i got really used to driving with one hand on the wheel , not doing a complete 3 second stop and blah blah....

    Re: Quick Question

Yeah hands at 9 and 3 only removing to shift, you dont do any parking, other than when you return from the test and pull into the lot.

It wasnt too bad just dont be an idiot and watch your speed.

And a sidenote when you turn in a residential area(right turn) and there is parking on the side of the road, with no cars, you are expected to go into the right(parking lane) then signal over into the left.

      Re: Quick Question

here's some tips to make sure you dont fail!

#1 and most important!!! PUT YOUR SEATBELT ON BEFORE YOU START THE CAR!!! its an automatic fail if you start the car without your seatbelt on.

      other than that:
      2) dont drive too slow because they will dock you marks for that too.
      3) watch for uncontrolled intersections, they will most likely take you into a neighborhood with some so remember to give right of way to vehicles on your right.
      4) come to a complete stop when leaving a parking lot
      5) they might ask you to list 3 potential accidents you see while driving. Give the simplest answers, they will accept anything (rolling stop, speeding, no turn signal, you get the gist of it)

I know some of these sound really simple and stupid, but i've heard stories of people failing cause of this crap. Good luck

Keep us posted on what they ask of you. These stories always give me a good laugh

Isn't shifting in an intersection and over railway crosses a no no too?

              Re: Quick Question

You're also not supposed to take your car out of gear at a red light. They'd rather you kept it in first and your foot on the clutch the entire time, for me hell no. I'm not riding my clutch like that, and I shift almost every time in the intersection. Then again if you actually know how to control your car you're fine.

Really? You can't wait 30 seconds to a minute at a set of lights with your foot down to the floor? How stiff is your clutch? I know I got a performance one in, but dude. How bad could yours be?

Bad, quite the contrary instead of having the clutch engaged for that entire time I'll stick with just shifting into gear when I need to. If anything it'd reduce the wear on the clutch, performance or stock.

                      Re: Quick Question

I took my test quite a while ago but I seem to remember the not shifting in an intersection (I would verify though, and Ryan they are talking more about going through an intersection, not starting). Also not shifting while making a lane change (again, verify).

I was also made to leave my foot on the clutch with the car in gear. I don't do this now due to release bearing getting hot.

                        Re: Quick Question

Back home (UK)... When you stop i.e lights..Your supposed to take your car out of gear and put the handbrake on(E brake or whatever you call it here). This serves two reasons.
                        1. You dont burn out your clutch.
                        2. You dont rollbackwards (if on a hill/slant) and hit the car behind you. Ive seen a number of drivers in Calgary with bad clutch control who just roll backwards when the lights turn green.
Im kinda shocked to hear that they want you to keep your foot on the clutch. Considering the speed limits are so low here it make no sense to me (imho).

As for gearing I dont know how it works here. But when you come to a turn and are turning. You should always be in 2nd gear prior to the turn (unless stopped), never 1st or 3rd.

yea if you drive a new passat they have an electronic ebrake and this feature in the manuals that will auto engage the ebrake on hills for you automagically! kinda cool i spose then again i don't roll back.. i just roll

A buddy of mine has a honda element and it rolls back (it is an Auto).

You must have to seriously suck at driving a manual if you hit something behind you, you would have to roll back a ways.

I have to do this test soon as well, but just don't really care enough about it. It allows me to have a blood alcohol level above 0.00 but that is the only upside I can find. Plus I never drive after drinking.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't you insurance lower a little as well? I know that in Toronto it does once you get your G FULL, which is aka CLASS 5 here.
That's one of the reasons I am getting my class 5, i'm sick of paying so much for insurance, but I have to wait until I'm 25 and then it'll really go down.
