  • Bought some new toys

I got a D40 last September, my first DSLR, curious about photography and wanting to get into it. Didn't really know if it was something I was going to pick up and enjoy so I really wasn't ready to jump in with both feet. For $450 I really couldn't go wrong.

Fast forward to now, i've definetly gotten into it and love it. Only problem is the D40 really was starting to hold me back. The lack of CLS capability, having to cycle through menu's to change things quickly for different shots, ISO sensitivity and image quality....all were starting to get annoying.

Sold the D40 and kit lens for exactly what I paid for it, $450 and just went on a bit of a shopping spree yesterday.

That's a gorilla pod for the flash on the left if you are wondering....and the spare SD cards are for the gf who is heading to europe for 10 weeks.

As for gear I already have; Sigma 10-20, Nikon 50mm 1.8, Nikon 18-55 kit lens, and a manfrotto tripod and ballhead.

I spent last night playing around learning how to command control the remote flash from the Camera for remote flashes....definetly a wicked feature having CLS and allows for endless possibilities of creativity with lighting.

They are tearing down the old Colonel Belcher Hospital right across the street from my apartment, so for the last few months I have been documenting it. I haven't had a lens that could really get much reach, so its just been wide angle shots showing the progress of the teardown. WIth the 50-200mm VR I can really get some zoom on the details and its actually pretty amazing.

I've also been on strobist.com for the last little while doing lots of reading, and decided this evening I was going to build myself a lightbox. Cost me $3.50 for some tissue paper and tape. Knicked a spare box from work and some 11x14" paper to tape up inside. Cut large holes in the top and both sides, taped some tissue paper over them to diffuse the light, set up the tripod and a desk lamp on either side and the tripod in front and snapped away. Turned the guest bedroom into a mini-studio. Still got a few kinks to work out but its getting there.

    Here is my lightbox setup

And the photos I took in them

It's fun being able to go around the apartment and just find random stuff to throw in there.

Definetly loving the D90. Makes such a difference having everything you want to adjust on the fly right at your fingertips and not have to cycle through menu's to get at them. Don't get me wrong the D40 is a great starter camera, and I would have been drowning with a bigger camera starting out, but I outgrew it...and wanted something new.

You got a good shot of that teardown! I drove by while they were doing it and was pissed that I didn't have my gear.

i have actually just been filing everything in Bridge and I've got over 500 shots of the teardown. They have been gutting it for the last few months, and then the physical teardown started last Friday.

As cool as it is to watch, i will be glad when it's done. I can't sleep in on my Friday's off cause they start work at 6:45am and fire up the dozers to let them warm up as soon as they arrive, then screw off to the trailer office to go drink coffee until 7:30. And on warm days like this last week we can't have any windows or doors open cause of the dust.

I got a D40X for the Wife and she likes it but found the menus a little frustrating too. Dont think shell be upgrading any time soon though, like the photo of the lense you took, looks very sharp and balanced.

                  lookin good

                      lens wise i have;
                      sigma 10-20mm
                      nikon 18-55
                      nikon 55-200mm VR
                      nikon 50mm f1.8
nikon 35mm f1.8 <- ordered but hasn't arrived yet, back order due to being newly released.

have a manfrotto tripod and ball head with quick release plate, as well as a gorilla pod for the speedlight.
I'd like to pick up one more speedlight to complete my kit. either a SB-600 or SB-800 if i can find one used for a decent price

Thanks man. According to my shutter count i've snapped over 5,000 pics since September. It's like anything, practice practice practice.
