  • Network help

In our office we have a 5 computers all networked using a hub connected to a router to access the internet. I moved one of the older computers to a new station. At the new station Internet Explorer and some update programs cannot access the internet. It sees the network fine and other internet programs (like internet radio through windows media player) also work.

We tried another computer in that station and it also could not access the internet through internet explorer but the network is fine.

I have been through the firewall and router configuration, have tried different cables where possible (the new station is kinda far away from the hub with cables run through the walls), reset everything (hub, router, modem, etc.). I will get Firefox going shortly to see if that works, but I still may not have internet acces to some programs.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks
    Jeff

      Re: Network help

try swapping where the cable goes into the hub and see if the problem follows the hubs port or the PC. might eb a configuration or similar problem on that hub port.

For it only to block partial traffic i would htink it would need to be a port blocking / forwarding configuration issue in your firewall/router, maybe limited to an ip address?

Also agree with not using hubs anymore. Does your router not have enough ports on it to do without the hub?

At least get a switch in place of the hub....Way better performance.

Using just a router makes no sense, you might not have the computers near the router, or you might have a lot of computers.

            Re: Network help

I tried swapping ports on the hub, it didn't make a difference. Also tried Firefox and it didn't work either.

There is no port blocking or forwarding set up for the local IPs on the router.

We have a hub in the system because we have had it forever, over 8 years. The router is a recent addition to accommodate changes we made last fall, and they are in different parts of the office. Speed isn't a concern for what we are doing (drafting and word processing) so we haven't traded up for new equipment when the old stuff works fine (till now...).

              Check your cables?

Also try installing 3rd party firmware on the router if you want.
