  • Buying vs Building

I am curious how many of you have built your cars yourself vs paying to have someone else build it for you.

I started out trying to build it myself, but due to knowledge/time/money conflicts I was never able to get it done and running properly. Now she is in a shop getting finished up. I am looking forward to driving it, but I kinda miss all of the swearing, beer and work that goes into working on a car.

graeme would be a good valued answer for this

some work i do myself and some work i get a shop to do

i can do brakes and intercoolers and stuff myself but i need my timing belt done right now

i know i can do it myself and i have a ton of guides, bentley, etc but if i get that timing 1 tooth off my car is dead so i'm just paying to have it done for peace of mind

I do everything I can. I usually have things like downpipes, exhausts, etc. welded at a shop for me.
I had a shop time my 1.8T in the rabbit because like Ryan said, off one tooth and bye bye

When I was a student I had big ambitions to do the build myself. When I started working a job all day... well if you are working 10 hour days you won't have the time and energy to build a car :(

I try to do all my own wrenching, but for big stuff or "check ups" I take it to George. For instance, I did my entire Stage3 upgrade in my garage but took it to George for a final "once over" just to be sure everything was done right.

I do agree with Kris though...sometimes it's tough doing something as simple as an oil change when you know you could just pay someone and not have to worry about it.

Myself, anything and everything. Except when im in a bind where on one hand is fix car and on the other is study for exam. But i wont go near building a bottom end right now cause i don't have micrometers.

I was in this same boat...I am currently paying to have a car built, it looks way better then I could have ever done.

                  Re: Buying vs Building

I have been doing everything myself so far. As i like the satisfaction of knowing it was all me plus i get to know the car well what wire does what and such. I guess a since of pride? Plus it keeps me busy. With the rabbit i also have some resources to do it alot cheaper. Things like my 3" exhaust will be done at a muffler shop since i don't have a welder and want it done right. I have found doing it myself has been alot cheaper and since im trying to keep a fairly tight budget its been working well so far.
