  • Any linux Gurus?

    Hey all,

I took the plunge and wiped windows of the laptop as a test. All was going well (with ubuntu) pretty straight forward, but after I got home from vacation the laptop would connect to wireless but would not go online (firfox), if I connect hard wire, all is well but not wireless. I'm stumped and not familiar with linux so any help is appreciated.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will speak up but depending on what version of ubuntu you have it doesn't support wireless very well (at least not on my machine). Hardy Heron is supposed to be better but the previous version needed you to do some monkeying around in the Terminal.

I upgraded to Hardy but haven't had much luck getting it going yet.

I have been running Ubuntu on my Dell laptop for the last 2 years....everything works right out of the box on the last two versions of Ubuntu. If you are looking for a good source for tips check out this Ubuntu support site....http://ubuntuforums.org/

i am knowledgeable lol anyways.. you may need to compile drivers for you nice especially if its a new laptop with a N nic in it kinda deal

as others mentioned check the ubuntu or kubuntu forums.. debian has pretty good support out of the box but depending on the hardware and model it will be the suck..

WThe weird thing is that the wireless was working great, as was everything else, until I traveled, after that no go.

Fire up Update Manager and grab all the dependancies and see if there is any updates. I know since I fired my box up I have had to do quite a few updates to get everything working again, including my wireless as well.

                    Re: Any linux Gurus?

Normally it is server errors if they wont download. Most of the packages are mirrored on 10-20 servers, if there are continous errors then you can edit the config to change the servers but normally try again in a day or two and they will go through.

Did you just do the updates or did them before and the wifi still doesn't work?
                    What hardware are you using?
What distro do you have installed?

I spent some time getting to know some linux flavors last year...Drivers are a major issue...and I think if you are a windows user historically and havent used DOS...well forget it, buy a mac

The thing about Ubuntu is that if you know a decent amount of unix/linux it is as good as any other O/S (simplicity-wise)....if not, its a pain in the ass, unless you're willing to struggle through.
