  • drywalling question

for those that have tackled this i'm about to finish my garage and i need to start on the ceiling.. i have it semi insulated right now (leftovers from the walls)
anyways i calculated my ceiling square footage and i'm going to buy some R40 bags and go to town there..

onto the drywall. how hard is it to do the ceilings? do i need to rent the lift dealy or use my head to balance it?
should i buy the bigger 4x12 sheets or just stick to 4x8? doing the math they are all in 1-2$ of each other for the amount i need..

and since my door opener is obviously already there should i unbolt it from the studs and then put up the drywall and reattach to the drywall and stud or can you simply go around it then like spray mono foam or something around the openings and fill with drywall filler?

    Re: drywalling question

My advice would to for sure rent the drywall lift. I think the last time I rented one it was 16 bucks for a day, and it was totally worth it.

Smaller sheets are easier to work with but involve more taping if you plan on totally finishing off the ceiling, also you might want to look into the ceiling drywall as it is more rigid and less prone to sagging between the trusses. If your trusses are 24" apart I would suggest the ceiling drywall.

Unbolt your door opener if you can. It is way easier to work around if it is not attached. (rest it ontop of a 6' ladder or something)

I insulated my garage last summer with r-40 in the celing and r-20 on the walls and when it is -20 outside it is still about +1 iside with no heat. So it is really worth the extra cash for the r-40 in the ceiling!!!!!!

Use a lift, no if ands or buts. Larger sheets will save a lot of time and look at lot cleaner. If your garage is attached be sure to use durabond 90 for the first coat as it is more dense and will blow more car exhaust entering the house. As for taping etc go to http://drywallschool.com/ for some great tutorials.

thanks guys.. my walls are sealed now with like r28 or something its pretty thick crap.. i guess i'll rent a lift next week i want to get it done soon..

i noticed totem has the ceiling drywall but its like 10 bucks more a sheet!

i will finish it too.. fully paint it,etc and i'm installing some flourescent lights to replace teh bulbed ones so working on the car is easier

Putting it up is easy mudding is the crappy part.

ps. Do what i do, make your girlfriend hold the boards up while you leisurely screw them in. Heavy lifting is wicked overrated

100% get the lift, and I'd definately get a pro to do the mud and tape. It's definately an aquired skill. I also rented a sprayer and primed/painted the whole garage it in a couple of hours - highly recommended.

if you don't have any help, get a lift. If you have a buddy or two over I would do it without. I just finished my basement and we rented the lift for one day and ended up using it for ONE sheet. It takes more time to place the sheet on the rack and jack it up than it does to just jump on the ladder with one guy in the middle and the other screwing. And I COMPLETELY agree with Khyron about the paint sprayer. I put two coats of primer on my entire basement (walls AND ceiling) in about 3 hours...including and hour of drying time!

edit: hire someone to mud and tape unless you have unreal patience...if you do anything less than a 100% job it will show.
