  • Home theatre ?'s

Hey guys so i'm getting a new TV.. its a 52" sony xbr 1080p

i was thinking of getting new speakers since my current ones are old and kinda junky
my current pioneer receiver does 1080i and just has component switching which works fine has all the sound formats, etc

would it be worth it to buy a new receiver with HDMI switching/1080p support? they aren't that much money now and I'm sure I could find a package at visions or bestbuy, etc

i was also thinking of retiring the xbox for a popcorn HD unit as that one bart posted looked pretty cool!

thoughts and opinions pls and thx

    Re: Home theatre ?'s

not really worth it unless your gonna use your receiver as a switch cause you have many components that use HDMI and your TV doesn't have enough inputs, or everything to be controled and set by the receiver.

Id be more concerned with optical a digital sound inputs if you have those save your money for now. and when your receiver craps out then upgrade . put money towards a good set of speakers and then in a later date consider the receiver. IMO

Unless your building a whole new sound system and want the latest and greatest and don't have the problem with spending more money go for it. I know i would do that cause i have a problem with "I WANT"

You know what i don't know, maybe get a new receiver and just run everything through it.

If your receiver works great maybe dont and suffer a bit with switching channels to get components going for now.

my popcorn arrived the other day, its great.

for speakers i have a sony soundbar (got tired of real surround speakers), it comes with a sub and built in receiver. it was ~$400, sony store has them, they have a really good review.

when i ordered price was ~$270cad. gone up probably cause of dollar.

its a canadian seller. so far it plays every 1080p i threw at it. just installed a 1tb internal drive in it too. it has bluray chip it in, so proper bluray rips will play no problem. A-110 is the one I got (newer model).

I forgot about that Popcorn unit.

I just bought the HP MediaSmart Home Server. Was not planning to buy it unitl the spring but was able to PM it at BestBuy for $390 for the 500GB model.

The Popcorn will be perfect for pulling in content from the server, unless someone has a better solution. Ideas?

Personally I have not had good luck with Visions, I prefer BestBuy, but I must agree that Visions does have some pretty good prices.

If you get swung back to speakers, I have heard these are good on a budget:

Amazing speakers, even the small home theatre speakers (cinema series). If you want to be amazed, pony up for the Paradigm reference series.

Time to start some controversy then!

Paradigm quality has been going steadily downhill while the price has gone steadily up, IMO. They gained brand recognition and now people like to throw the name around a lot. But there are better speakers for the money. Back 5 years ago I might have told you that they were great, but no longer. Buy Paradigms only if you want to tell your friends you have them.

You can easily test me if you don't believe me. Go to Sounds of Music on 8th or to General if they are still open by Chinook, and ask to demo some paradigms. Then go down to The Audio Room and Loyalty Audio and even K&W and tell them that you want to listen to something better and cheaper or the same price. If you still prefer the Paradigms for the money, I'll retract my statements.

But even with that being said, there are way more speakers that you can't even find in town that will hold up to or exceed what Paradigm delivers, IMO. Lots of internet based distribution companies are producing really great speakers now.
