  • Auto painting question

Any body shop guys around here? Have some paint work I did on my own. Have done small touch-up stuff a lot in the past, and usually have acceptable results. On my last go, everything looked good, but after a few weeks, one area that I painted and cleared started to show fine cracks in the clear coat. It doesn't seem to be everywhere though. I did a large part of a quarter panel, and up the A pillar and top of the door on the passenger side. The quarter panel looks fine, as does most of the A pillar but the the top of the door is where these cracks are. Pretty sure this are will start flaking off clearcoat in time. Might go to a pro to get it fixed at that time, but I would like to know what caused this so I can maybe avoid it next time.

As far as what I did.. I sanded, and cleaned with a sovlent meant for pre painting cleaning. Sprayed three coats of colour (fine, med, heavy), allowing time to flash between coats. Then applied 3 coats of clear, same way. After a week or so, I gave it all a quick wet sand, and polished it all up. It all looked good for a few weeks, then the cracks showed up.

Oh, the paint and clear that I used were mixed @ Calgary Body Shop Supplies, so it should be decent quality.

    Any thoughts are appreciated.

    Re: Auto painting question

From what I know about painting, this happens if the color coat underneath is not given enough time to fully be dry before applying the clear. It can also occur if the car is exposed to changing heat or humidity while drying either the coat underneath or the clear coat.

    Hope this helps.

      Re: Auto painting question

i was thinking heat when drying just because it is on the top of the door, and most likely to get direct sun. I left the car in a garage over night, and the next day was overcast, but it is possible.

like scribble marks? i had this happen to me... the prep i think is not of good quality, then with time the paint and clear sinks into it and it shows through... is that what you are talking about?
