  • Interesting Drive

So I went down to waterton and montana for the long weekend.. amazing drive down there and into montana/glacier park!

interesting thing in montana.. the highways have speed limits of 65-75 or 110-120 roughly

    WTF

the highways with 110 were like ours that have 80km/hr on them!

the highways with 75 were like #2 (it was interstate 15)

i could do 140-150 and nobody would even blink twice nor cared people were cruising down there.. passed some cops didn't even care

sheesh and prices on groceries, etc down there.. WE GET RIPPED OFF!!! some prices are even but some are SOOO CHEAP compared to our local stores

fun trip anyways..mountain roads are so much fun to drive on

    Re: Interesting Drive

I just spent some time down there a few weeks ago. The "going to the sun road" is amazing! It's a pretty slow drive but well worth it! The open highways on the west side were also quite nice.

The price of booze is super cheap!

Yup, Canadians get seriously ripped off in almost all areas compared to the US. I lived in the States for the last 15 years and can attest to the insane prices of basically everything in Canada. Especially the houses.

      Still love it here though.

        Re: Interesting Drive

i just came back from 7 weeks of road trip / vacation across the states and yeah the prices are insanely different. However, even western US gets a lot more expensive in comparison to eastern. The gas was 3.50 a gallon there once i hit north dakota the price went up almost .25 a gallon and as much as .50 within 30 minutes apart. And shortly after would drop back down to 3.79 a gallon again.

Groceries are amazingly cheaper in the eastern US, meats, and fresh fruit. They didnt have our great alberta beef, but they tended to have more angus every where though. Fruits and veggies were excellent quality, not half ripe like we get here.

But driving i noticed once you got past montana you got 4 - 6 lane highways. They drastically improved in quality. There were state police all over but never was I pulled over, followed or forced to slow down as much as when i got back into alberta. Most of the time I ended up doing anywhere from 140 - 160 and sometimes faster depending on stretches and other vehicles with me.

There were troopers pulling people over along the way, but mostly it seemed older cars that probably shouldnt be driving anything over 100 anyway. Maybe it was just my alberta plates in places ohio.

At one point i followed a trooper in an unmarked new Dodge Charger for about 20-25 minutes both of us doing 185+. I thought for sure i was busted when i realized and he slowed down to park off the interstate, but he just pulled over and let me go.

But, i can say i was never so glad to return to Canada. As long as our hospital waits are, and the prices of things, we also have a more relaxed feeling. People are friendly, yes even the police (i did finally get pegged for a ticket back in canada). You can say good morning and get a response back thats not a scowl. You can wake up and see the mountains out your window, and drive 40 minutes to banff. Our highways may not be 6 lanes, but we dont need them, the traffic is never bad enough.

The states is great to visit, but Canada is definately the place to live imo.

Am I the only one who finds Alberta beef overrated??
I've eaten in steakhouses in the states (Montana, Nevada, Texas) and ignoring differences in seasonings, the quality of beef in all of the American places I've eaten has surpassed anything I've eaten here (*** note that in terms of higher end steakhouses I've only eaten at the Vintage Chophouse, Chicago Chophouse, and Saltlik, all of which boast at least AAA grade beef, if not aged longer in-house). Not surprisingly, the best steak (meat quality wise) I've had was at the Don Schula's in the Hyatt in Houston....
