I can't even vote, and I can see that this is stupid....As said before, its fine if there is a motion that is "voted down" by the opposition, but that sure as hell doesn't mean you have to hand the magic stick to the next guy down the line because you proposed something that others don't agree with.....Pick it up and ****** move on. All you liberals can stuff it. thanks

The budget is something that is a confidence vote though, if it cannot pass the government will fall. If this was just a normal bill then they would move on as you all say, but budgets are not treated in the same way.

My biggest problem is that this all goes back to Harper, he was never forced to include this item and had to think it would cause a reaction, and he has still never acknowledged or apologized to us Canadians for starting this whole thing off.

No since the PM is just the leader of the controlling party, if Harper resigns they just appoint a new leader, whether for good or temporary and they would become PM. Just as if the coalition takes over Dion will only be PM till the Liberal leadership convention on May 2nd 2009 and then the winner of that will take over and become PM.

An important part that people need to remember and Harper is using as his propaganda, is the Bloc is not actually a key part of this coalition, they just support it. The cabinet will be all Liberals and NDPs, with Dion and Layton being the PM and Deputy PM and the Bloc will vote with them on confidence bills (Thrown Speech and Budgets) and can vote their own way on other items. Him using the fact that they are siding with Separatists is stretching the situation as the Bloc is usually required for support in house voting and he has made agreements for their support in the past just the same.

With Harper's constant separatist and anti-Bloc speeches he is very much alienating the province of Quebec as well (I know most people do not care about that) however he is very much hurting his chances for gaining ground there and thus eventually getting a majority government.

I will not argue my thought on the situation mainly because im just your average angry westerner, who completely understands the situation but just doesn't like Dion(neither did his party not too long ago).

One thing i will argue though is why Quebec gets so many seats. yes a vote of non confidence would represent 60% of the seats thought harper was a tool, but does that really represent canada?
Canada has changed since the 1860's lmao so should the system of our whole government. obviously not a lot and not all at once especialy in a time of "crisis"(which i am still failing to notice unless your heavily invested). but something need to be done, the west keeps getting screwed(Trudeau) either way you look at it and we just don't get enough say in the matter.

              • Re: Another election......are you serious?

This has effectively turned us into a 2 party system. Cons or "anyone but cons". And with a margin of what, 11 seats, neither side can claim clear majority rights.

All the fear mongering about Harper and how he'd be a dictator - is everyone forgetting the cherry picked liberal senate? The whole point of having them is so a PM with a majority can't just do whatever he wants, along with the conf vote. Do you really think he could just do whatever he wanted even with a majority? The same is NOT true with a majority of leftists - they could very well take the side of unions, protectionists and environmentalists and drive the economy even further into the toilet. Do you think anything that Layton proposes will do any good for the economy as it stands now? I've already heard auto unions are refusing to negotiate salaries even faced with bankruptcy. A gov that sides with the unions is suicide.

IF the coalition was Libs and NDP from the beginning I'd be fine with it. The cons are basically a permanent coalition of the reform and PCs anyway. But many of the lib and NDP supporters were voting just to keep Harper from a majority. They were not voting to expect that they would actually kick them out of power. There would be a lot less votes for the left if it came down to everyone knowing it was right v left+quebec and that's it.

Doesn't anyone want to know what exactly the Libs/NDP promised the Bloc? The Bloc's sole motivation is what is good for Quebec and what will destabilize Canada. That's it. So what were they promised? Why is Parizeau dancing with glee and the thought that the coalition will mean a complete breakdown? Sure the cons voted with the bloc and other times it was the libs - depends on what worked best for Quebec. But to make an arrangement that pretty much guarantees Quebec HAS to vote with the coalition until 2011 means they have been given some pretty big concessions.

Finally the simple chaos of changing parties and bringing in completely green people to deal with the current situation is horrible. If the libs had a strong leader and a budget ready to go then ok, game on. But we're basically voting in someone who's going to be gone in 4 months. What good is he going to do with building relations with the new US gov? Or the rest of the G20? They all know he's a lame duck so why waste any time with him.

Don't confuse disagreeing with your position as lack of understanding how the political system works. We pick the house, the house picks the government. But they're making a brutal gamble and many of us see it.

Did anyone else like Harpers speech to the ignorant last night? He made it seem like a non-confidence vote is illegal and un-democratic which is exactly what a majority of conservative voters already believe (at least the ones I have spoken to)

Was anyone else watching Global National when they interviewed a conservative MP and he was unable to explain why the coalition and its actions were "un-democratic"

I still have not heard or seen how the liberals are going to do anything better. Besides write a cheque.

I also don't recall Harper saying this is illegal.

With regards to the interview, was it live? If so explain why they were talking to someone live. The leader of the liberal party doesn't do that.

Anyone see how CTV cut back to Oprah because they got sick of waiting for Dion's webcam broadcast. Everyone else just joked about how bad the liberals are at organizing themselves. Why did he need to do a prerecord anyways? In the past when other leaders have responded like this they came out and spoke to the media live. Dion can't get it straight and we expect him the get the economy straight. Give me a break

Has nothing to do with it. I would honestly be on side with the Liberals, except their views on taxation and environment (2 things which effect me most at the moment) are not the same views as my own. There are alot of things I don't agree with 100% with the Conservatives either, but they are issues that fall on the "less important" scale.

No person is 100% of anything. To be so is one sided misinformed. If the current Liberal platform was a little more grounded in their goals and a bit more reasonable in execution it may not be such a bad thing. But as said MANY times in this thread, we aren't talking about the Libs, we aren't talking about the NDP, we aren't talking about the Bloc.....We're talking about them TOGETHER which is a whole different beast. Its a marriage of convenience, not necessity. If it wasn't a "power grab", how come smilin' Jack secured "deputy PM" as a title in this whole shindig? If this was for the better of the country as they say, wouldn't he be less worried about that? Its a blatant attempt to secure Canada in ANYONE but the Conservatives power because apparently NOBODY likes that.

I assure you, once the government stops dragging their feet and actually turns around citizenship app's in a decent time period I will be voting the next go round....they couldn't make it for me this time.
