  • Duty when driving across the border

Hey guys, just wondering if anyone knows what duty would be on clothes/shoes and whatnot when driving across the border?

We're over our cap after we started adding it all up and we are thinking of returning some stuff unless the cost is reasonable. Just thought I'd see if anyone has done this recently.

Any help would be appreciated. The only info I can find on the web states that anything over the cap will be subject to duty/GST/PST but no where does it say what the % of duty is, it almost sounds like they arbitrarily pick a number which I hope isn't the case.

Duty is all based upon the country of origin of the products, a safe bet is 6% duty and then 5% GST. How much are you really over, I think some of it you brought down with you??

Thanks guys, I scrounged that website you posted Stefan but no where does it list the % of duty.

Anyway, I'll find out shortly I guess.

i know, it's way too complicated. 6-7% is probably a safe assumption. I know with bicycles, its 13%, unless they are made within the NAFTA countries.

The guys at the other end of that phone # were pretty helpful when I called.

I tried that number, doesn't work in the US

It's mostly clothes and such, that macleans article says "footwear" can be between 11-20% though.

Unpack it all... wear it for a day... scuff it up a little... and only claim what's in your range of stay...

Well turned out to be a non issue luckily, and no I didn't lie, I'm a good citizen

And Ryan, it would have been tough for the 2 of us to wear 7 pairs of shoes multiple shirts and pants across haha.

We were at a really big crossing so I didn't want to be too dishonest because they could make your life reeeaaaaaalllly difficult.
