  • Day to day digital camera...

So, my kids got their hands on my Canon digital camera and dropped it. The lcd screen took the most of the damage. Anyways I was wondering if any members can recommend a rugged affordable digital camera I can get to replace my hooped Canon.

I think rugged and camera are not usually in the same sentence. I have enjoys the Kodak easyshare camera my wife won. For a cheap quick camera it is decent to use.

We are in the market too and while on vacation I got to try my brother's point and shooter (he has a DSLR too). It is a Panasonic DMC TZ5. 9 megapixels and 10x optical zoom. It was very fast and all the pics I have seen from it were awesome. It even took good video. I am going to get one soon. may actually be on sale at london drugs:

If you want something cheap, works and you're not afraid to break, look at a used one. TON'S of them on used Calgary for generally pretty good prices. We bought our Canon point and shoot a couple years ago now (or maybe even less) for 329 or something and would be lucky to get 50 bucks for it used even though it's had less than 1000 pictures taken on it and not a scratch or scuff to be had.

My buddy has an olympus point and shoot camera that is drop proof from 4ft (iirc) and it's completly waterproof as well. Saw them at best buy in the states for $260.00

That Panasonic looks pretty good, our Canon S80 has been all over the world the last couple years and taken probably 5,000+ pics but it is starting to get pretty beat and we would like a little more zoom, but don't think I am quite ready to carry a DSLR around.

I have a Canon A590, which has lasted me pretty well, even through a tough few months in Europe

Great camera, but you'll have to live without a viewfinder.

you want something that will take a beating, an olympus stylus is the ticket. cannon point and shoots still take the best pictures, And thats coming from a person who only ever uses nikon DSLR's

one consideration is you might want to get one that takes AA batteries so you dont get stuck with a dead battery if you forgot to charge it! the trade off is these are usually larger and heavier, ie more susceptible to damage if dropped

35mm still can't beat the quality.
