  • Comp problems again

Alright... here it goes. (remember I suck with computers) My Laptop running Windows XP somehow became totally corrupted. I can't change backgrounds... alot of files are missing or not working... it no longer reads my CD drive, so I can't burn files. Anyhow, there are some files on there I NEED to keep. If I were to use the sony recovery CD, would that re-format both my C AND D drives? or just my C drive?

    Thanks Guys,
    Colin

It shouldn't need to format your D, but that doesn't mean it won't. Go through the painful process of calling support before doing it if you want to be sure and have no place to back up to.

sounds to me like your profile has become pooched.. i can fix it for you but i charge.. more than likely the files are actually still there too.. if your whole install is corruped the files are more than likely there too but the OS is hooped.. i would have to see it before making judgements though

ps.. just reset a password over dialup.. how many hours of OT should I charge out.. 3 i think mauahhahaha

        thanks ryan :( lol

What you said sounds exactly right. I had to change alot of the permisions within my registry just to get some things to happen... and it still wont let me copy stuff onto my CD drive..... It's freaking annoying. So I think I might just have to reformat the whole thing :(

The only drive that still seems to work is the memorystick.... but I don't have one :(

Basically you should backup your files then reinstall windows on a fresh formatted drive.

Here are some things to try when it comes to backing up your files.

          1. Have you tried safe mode? Often you can get devices (like your CDR drive, network or modem) to work in Safe mode. You could then use your CDR drive to backup your files before re-installing windows.

          2. You can always borrow a USB drive or other external drive. Then backup your files onto that. Or buy one from future shop, use it, then return it the next day. It works.

          3. What about backing up your files over the network? Modem? Serial Port? I can give you a Serial Cable for free.

          4. Boot to a different OS then backup the files from there. You can use Linux or DOS or whatever, as long as you can read the filesystem.

          5. You can repartition your drive. Basically you would split it in half. (C drive becomes a C and also a D). Then keep one of the drives as-is with all of your backed up files. Format the other. Install windows on the fresh partition.

Hope this helps. Don't pay Ryan.

Thanks Kris..... I appreciate your help. I ended up partitioning my drives and reformating them. It works like a charm now... and everything I needed is still here. Thanks again..... for NVD tech-support

no problem.. the only reason I said I charge (cuz i do work for free ) its just I do that **** all day long and it gets annoying but if you worked your stuff out thats great.. i personally end up using my DVD burner or my 20gig IPOD and backup all my **** to it every month that way I won't loose the kazillion mp3s and various other softwares and movies

edit.. colin also since you live only 20 seconds from me if you do need help and its easy (takes me 1min-1hour) enough I can do it for you anytime.
oh yea colin.. install Nero onto your PC this time because the built in XP burning can get hooped but nero should still work (well unless your system is really fucked)

the problem with Nero... is that it never works on my comp. I loaded it up again.... but under the "choose recorder" my burner never shows up. The only thing that does is an "Image recorder".... so it never actually burns the data onto a CD.... it's messed.. LOL

install an ASPI layer onto your comp and it'll fix that right up.. even XPs built in burning when it first came out didn't work until you installed the ASPI layer

                  http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/sup...aspi_471a2.exe

                  this should work for you..
