CTV acquires rights to hockey theme song

Updated Mon. Jun. 9 2008 4:41 PM ET

Canadian hockey fans can continue singing a happy song -- the hockey theme song that is.

CTV has acquired the rights to the theme song that has played on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada for 40 years.

Last week, the CBC publicly announced that it could not reach a deal with the song's copyright holders. CTV sealed the deal with Copyright Music & Visuals Monday morning.

Hardly blame CTV to quickly scoop CBC (AGAIN!!!), yet it'll be weird hearing that timeless intro, on TSN.

CBC refused to pay, they were prepared to let it rot and buy a new song anyway. At least someone stepped up and kept it alive.

Somebody HAD to do it. CBC should get their funding cut for even comtemplating ditching that tune!

I guess you didn't read the article about how CBC has been in talks for the rights for a long time and even offered a large amount to buy the sound outright. They only started looking for a new song after the talks ended. You can bet the talks fell though because CTV came in and scooped it on them. BTW they plan to rework the song so they better now butcher it.

                      Re: Hockey night on CTV?

CTV bought it for 3 mil...CBC could have easily afforded* to pay that same price, so clearly they werent in REAL negotiations

*using tax dollars. Id be happy to know thats where my tax dollars went!
