  • Car deal

I'm in the process of buying a new vehicle and after a few weeks of looking around and test drives I've settled on a model and now its come down to negotiating a price. I've done a lot of research and have gone through carcostcanada.com to find out what the dealer cost is.

The dealer has offered me $1200 off MSRP which equates to about 5.3% above dealer cost. Car Cost Canada suggests that a reasonable offer would be in the 3-6% range.

Is it unreasonable to counter at something like 3.5-4% over dealer cost?

The two cars I'm considering are both on the dealers lot which from what the salesmen tells me means they are more flexible on price.

Depends on the brand. Domestics move way more. Also if the model is popular or not, if the color is popular or not, etc. How long it's been on the lot..

        Spoken like a vet,

I'd seriously recommend checking out a few cars south of the border. People will tell you its a huge hassle - it isn't. You pay GST (5%) at the border and get Daytime Running lights installed at Cambodian Tire.
