Re: Thinking about a small car

The latest budget was after that site was last updated so I think it is out of date, but I will try to get some proof.

Also the mini must be pretty borderline as it only qualifies if it is a manual?

Not to get off topic but think about how much the cost of living is going to go up granted the high fuel prices, the price of everything is slowly going to start to climb.

Looks like you can still get it on a 2008 model bought this year but then no more.

My ideal car for fuel economy is just finding a really nice Mk1 or Mk2 and swapping in a nice new VW engine One day maybe. Would be pretty fun to have a Mk2 GTI with a twincharged VW 1.4L TSI. Keep the engine completely stock so its nice and reliable.

I heard the seats in the supercharged Mini are terrible. Does anyone know if the seats in the new turbo model are any better?

I just read a few articles that they were uncomfortable. Never sat in one myself, thought I'd ask.

Also, I'd love to get a mini of some of the others, even just a classic, but they are 22,000 and the rate is 5.9% (ouch) so it's WAY more money than the others. Plus actually the versa has 10 more hp than the mini too (I bet it's less fun to drive though).

                        The clubman rate is 7.75!!!

I spent the better part at mini today. Huge fan now and the price is not to bad at all.

Re: Thinking about a small car

Well last night I went to the Mini Clubman Challenge at COP and drove a Cooper Clubman, Clubman S, 5 Door GTI and a Volvo C30 non-turbo. I did not like the Volvo at all, not sure if it changes a lot with the trim but I found the car very mushy from steering to braking and was not impressed at all (the car was an auto).

Both the Mini's were nice and drove well, the course did not really allow for a huge amount of leg stretching as it is designed for 2nd gear, but the additional power in the S was nice, but the braking and steering felt good from my short time behind the wheel. The interiors of the mini are still quite small and cluttered (the Smart feels less confined to me) and the lounge leather is horrendous in my opinion. After driving the GTI the Mini just did not seem worth the premium money and the feel of the GTI was great and Sarah and I easily picked it as our favorite of the group.

With a 5 Door GTI starting at 28,975 and the Clubman S at 31,500 and less power and standard features I think it is hard to justify the Mini, especially when looking at finance rates too. I still like the Mini but I am just not convinced it is worth the extra money, and the extra room in the GTI would be more practical, just need to see if I can find a way to make it fit in my parking spot as Sarah does not want to let go of the Smart.
