  • New GTR eats Carrera GT

    http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/08/n...stun-observers

The prototype Nissan GT-R V-Spec, wearing the "Victory Specification" designation reserved for the ultra high-performance Nissan GT-R, has been caught lapping the famed Nürburgring at an incredible, if not simply unbelievable, 7:25 per lap. This, according to bystanders trackside. (For comparison, Walter Röhrl lapped the Ring in 7:28 while driving a Porsche Carrera GT in 2004.)

In contrast to the standard Nissan GT-R, that made the run around the 'Ring in 7:38, the GT-R V-Spec has a new front splitter, modified rear spoiler, and different wheels. A more extensive use of carbon fiber has reportedly reduced the weight by upwards of 330 pounds. Of course, Nissan engineers also tweaked the twin-turbo powerplant for another 70 horses... or so.

On paper, the car just should not be as quick as it keeps showing it is.

Its pretty quick for sure, I think one thing Nissan has going for them with this PR approach is that they get as many tries as they want. They can lap the ring 30 or 40 times with a dedicated team and car spec'd specifically for the purpose of doing so, then they can really celebrate their best time, even if it just beats a record by 1 second (in this case 3 seconds).

Obviously though the Carrera GT is so much more expensive than the Nissan, that this is a big achievement.

I'm a little worried that Nissan is really building what is more like a coach-built tuner car, something like you'd see from RuF lapping the ring and destroying base 911 times. The thing is, will the car stand up to 3 or 5 or 10 years of ownership and hard driving by people who don't baby their cars?

The GTR is very impressive and the V Spec is even more so and they seem to be working very hard at getting some impressive times on the 'Ring. This car is going to shake things up in the industry which is good but will be interesting to see what happens when they are actually running around the streets.

Do you guys think Nissan is taking a big loss on the these cars to just get them out there??

Just got my tickets to see this bad boy in person in June, should be one fun weekend, covered seats, pit passes and 5 support races including the Aston Martin Asia Cup.

Even have a regular GTR as the safety car

I too am very amazed at this cars performance figures it has been posting so far but like Kris said I am very interested in seeing how well this car can stand the test of time for both the typ. roadgoer and more for the weekend racer, I mean it boggles me how a car so big and heavy can perform as well as it does, R&T ran it around Willow over 5sec. faster lap times than the Z-06 a car that is 700lbs lighter has 20 more hp and ~40 more ft/lbs of torque, incredible if not unbelievable! My point is that the cars drivetrain must be going through unbelievable amounts of stress when pushed to perform so over time how well is everything going to hold up.
