Yeah, its all in good fun at any rate. I looked at getting an A4 before I bought my car but I found the 3 series to be a little more fun.

At any rate, I don't think I'll ever go back to a 2WD car again, I'm hooked for life now.

If you're driving at 80km/hr and taking a turn, how does your drivetrain (fwd/rwd/awd) determine in anyway shape or form how your adhere to the road?

because if the back tires slip my quattro transfers power to the front

then if a side wheel slips it transfers power across to the other side all simultaneously .. not to mention ESP helps

that being said.. if the road is pure ice and you don't know.. its ditchy time for pretty much anyone

btw about the xdrive i was just bugging.. i've never been in a bmw awd but i'm sure its not that bad..

Right. But even further than that, AWD only helps in application of power. Ie, going up an icy hill, getting out of a ditch etc. (I would still argue that an AWD with poor tires would still be beaten by a single drive axle with better tires).

AWD does nothing to help you on a slippery corner, or stopping. You'll win stop light drag races, but that's it. Cornering and stopping are all tires. Unfortunately AWD people (especially SUVs) typically get a false sense of security and thus are even more likely to end up in the ditch.

Tell that to a rally racer. While I do agree with your comment on tire difference and yes no matter what you are driving if you turn a sharp icy city corner at 80km/h you are hitting the curb/wall, that's just stupidity, but your comment here about AWD not helping at all on slippery corners or with stopping abilities is very uninformed and just plain wrong.

I said it doesn't help unless you are ACCELERATING which is the case in racing (you power out of the corners), but not your average street driving/turning corners. If you are going fast enough to break your wheels loose, your drive train becomes irrelevant - friction is gone. Whether you regain traction is a matter of your momentum, weight and the grip of your tires.

And it has virtually zero affect on ice stopping abilities in all but the marginal use of engine braking, a fact which I'll gladly debate with any rally driver. But they won't debate because they know that is certainly true. If anything the extra weight of the AWD system will increase the stopping distance. Tires are 100 times more important.

Edit: Just to keep it simple - driving forward at X speed, slamming on the brakes and letting the ABS stop you like 99% of the drivers on the road would do. This isn't about pro drivers.

This is about yahoos driving with summer tires on AWD thinking the awd will keep them out of accidents.

Okay so what you are now saying is with AWD slippery cornering can be aided (in certain situations) by the application of power, agreed and also stopping can be aided with AWD by the use of 4-wheel engine braking in certain situations, also agreed upon. I'm glad we both seem to agree now that yes infact AWD can be advantageous in certain situations when it comes too slippery corners and stopping, and yes like I already stated I agree with your comment on the importance of proper tires no matter what setup (AWD/FWD/RWD) your car is.

Sure I understand what you are saying here, I was just debating your comment about AWD having nothing to do about being able to aid a car in slippery corners or stopping ability.

Re: For those who have summer tires on now....

I have absolutly no train of thought in my mind to make me think that having AWD makes me invincible, and I'll admit to jumping the gun in putting summer tires back on.

I'm a huge fan of winter tires and with the exception of this winter have always had winter tires on my car (I'm hugely against no-season tires and have always told everyone I own not to bother with them).

That being said, AWD while not helping me stop helped me from getting stuck when traction was less than ideal, I saw enough FWD and RWD cars sitting on all-season tires that couldn't get up hills that I managed to on summers.

In summary, I agree to being a yahoo... however I'm not enough of a yahoo to use AWD as an excuse to drive like a jackass (I don't need excuses for that )

Agreed. When using the drivetrain to slow down, stop, or accelerate out of corners or from a stop, the ability to transfer traction to the wheels that have the most of it, is definitely advantageous.
