  • "New" to Calgary

    Hello all!

I've posted a few times already, and I have been lurking for quite a while.

I've recently returned to Calgary after being in the 'States for about 13.5 years. My euro fascination started a long time ago, and was fanned by a nice test ride in a heavily modified 930 about 12 years ago. It was amazing, I wasn't prepared for anything to accelerate so ferociously that I physically couldn't lift my head from the headrest!

I bought my first Euro car in December 1999, a 1986 Porsche 951 (944 turbo) that I flew out to Virginia and drove back in two days. That was a fun trip, mostly clear roads, but there were a few miles of snow. . . That the summer tires didn't like at all! From that point on I was hooked. I learned to perform all of my own maintenance, and over the years bought a 1990 Porsche 944S2 that ended up needing the engine rebuilt soon after I bought it. Ask me about that car sometime, needless to say, I still call that car the antichrist! I am currently driving around in a 1999.5 Jetta GL 2.slow auto that I picked up for a song (the antichrist was down for repairs and I needed a reliable, cheap car for a daily driver) and ended up fixing all the CELs and suspension problems that it had, so now it's not a pretty car, but it runs well.

I currently just have the Jetta up in Canada, but I hope to bring the modified 951 up this summer. The Porsche is currently being rebuilt by a really good friend and I'm having a few mods made to it. I'm stroking it with a 3.0L crank from the S2 which will give me a displacement of about 2.8L and of course, I'm matching the turbo to the new performance level. My goal isn't max horsepower, but a good area under the curve, so it's nice and driveable. I plan on making this car my daily driver once it's sorted out.

I have a decent set of tools and a decent knowledge of cars and troubleshooting. I've rebuilt a couple of Porsche engines and there is basically nothing that I won't attempt. I'd love to get to know the Calgary eurodrivers and lend a hand when I can.

I'll try to find a few pictures to upload of my cars.

    Looking forward to meeting everyone!

    Dal.

    Welcome Dal

That is an interesting story and I would love to see some pics of the cars and the 951 when it is complete. One of our other members Simon (BoyRacer) had a 944S2 Cab a few years back and I remember some fun moments in that car!

I am sure you will be able to find some good parts for the Jetta around here too if you are so inclined.

Welcome again and hopefully we will see you out at some meets and events.

Welcome man!! I have had a Porsche itch for a long time now and will hopefully have a nice 911 in my garage in the not too distant future.

I'm torn between a 930 (as new as possible and preferrably a 1989) and a 964. The 964 would have to be a 92-94 and would love the 94 widebody but with only 250 made for NA thats a tough one to find. Ultimately, a 1994 turbo S would work but I can't afford one of those!!!

Yea a 993 TS is on my short list too. I've seen a few of those and I like them a LOT. In about a year or so I'm planning to pick up a 2002+ 996C4 for a daily driver. I'll most likely buy it in the States and bring it up. The prices here for anything with a Porsche badge are unbelievable. I've looked at a few 986 (Boxsters) 1998 - 2001 in the States before I left and they were dropping down to the low 20k range, some below that, depending on condition. You can get a good condition 993 for the low 30's, mid 20's if you look in the right places.

I could talk cars for hours. I look forward to meeting up with you sometime. Beer maybe?

993 Turbo S is one of the most sought-after Porsche cars for sure... finding one in great shape will cost you a pretty penny these days though. They've appreciated quite a lot for those who kept them in good shape!

          Eg.

          $168,900
          Yowzers!

You'll never get a nice 993 for 30's or 20's IMO! Not in the kind of shape that makes it a worthwhile investment.

Dal, if you're looking at the 996 series you should drive a Cayman too For me it was no contest and basically the same price.

A lot of those Boxsters which got really cheap also got really beaten down. :( They'll be broken and scratched and torn and so on.

I agree with most of your points, but I'm not worried too much about the cars being too beaten down, or even if the engine is on the way out (in the 996 series) since a rebuilt (2 year warrantee crate engine from Porsche) costs about $6k, and I'd be able to R&R it over the weekend. You're correct that the 993 (or any aircooled 911) engine rebuild will cost a LOT more. Hell, a set of rebuilt heads on a 993 will cost as much as the crate engine on the 996.

The Rennlist is not a great place to look for deals. I'm Dal Heger on the rennlist by the way.

For $low 30k 996s there is no contest. I have driven a 2001 996 from a used dealer's lot and they were asking only $36k. It's still sitting there as far as I know (Oklahoma). I'll bet they'll take a low 30's offer. It had about 40k miles and was in excellent shape. That same day, they also had a pretty beat up boxster that smoked on startup they were asking about $24k. Yea, no thanks on that one.

There are great deals out there, you just need to know where to look.

So, are you offering a test drive in your Cayman . Maybe later. When I get my 951 up this summer (hopefully) we'll take them out for a little backroad mountain sprint!
