  • Calgary BMW = Crooks

I encourage those of you looking for new BMW's to go elsewhere for your BMW purchases. I mentioned my troubles and families troubles with them (6 vehicles later), and today was the last straw.

In order to register my M-Coupe I need to go through a process:
    1) Recall Clearance letter
    2) Provincial and Federal Inspection

I know I have to pay $500 to BMW Canada to receive this "recall clearance letter", which sucks, but I can deal with that. So I go in today to get my letter, and they tell me, well first we need to inspect your car! I look at them and ask why? I need the recall clearance, and not an inspection. The guy looks at me and say's... well your car needs to have DRL's installed. I tell him I've already done that... to which he responds, well we need to see it, inspect it, and test and reflash your software!! For WHAT?! Bad enough they try to gouge you for $500, but now they try to make me add another inspection?! This new inspection is going to cost another $400 in addition to the BMW recall letter for $500!

Add this to the fact that they sold my dad a "probably" crashed 540 without telling him, and my Mom a lemon X5..... I've had it. For those wishing to purchase a BMW in the near future, do yourself a favour and look elsewhere. *end rant*

Thats why BMW is being sued for these tactics regarding the vehicle importation , as for the issues with your parents, not sure what to say but selling a crashed car with out disclosing I am sure must be against the law of some sorts.

Is Gallery any better, I am pretty sure they are owned by the same people, makes me think as I am thinking about Mini's lots lately.

Yes, the gallery is owned by the same people. I love BMW, but will not be purchasing one from any dealer for a very long-time. The 540 was purchased from Calgary BMW, and the X5 from BMW Gallery. Both are nothing short of brutal - especially for service when your vehicle needs it.

The stupid thing is, nothing will ever come out of that lawsuit either.

I'm just checking now if this is for all dealers in Canada.

Importing my Porsche, I had to actually pay for an inspection. But it was less money, I think $350 or something, and it included them enabling my DRL's (free). I did not have to pay for a recall letter. The inspection was basically so that they would honor my warranty in Canada (so they say). I don't care, its not that much money compared to the cost of the vehicle. They were really nice to me at the service department at SCFC, way better than when I went in there with my VW. And honestly having the car inspected was a bit of a relief, you never know when you buy a used car what could be wrong with it.

I can definitely see the benefit of the inspection. Problem is, that's not included in the $400. The inspection only includes reflashing my software.... for what I have no idea, as I already replaced the relay.

I have heard so many bad things about Calgary BMW from many different people. It's a shame really because the cars are great, but I don't think I would purchase one if it meant I had to deal with them. :(

I guess different experiences for different folks... my family has never had any problems with Calgary BMW.. In the last 5 years we've had three new cars.. and not one problem. (330, 540, M5) Mind you My Dad has known the Manager for many years.. and has typically dealt with him.

They've had a bad rep for a long time. There's even a website out there specifically pertaining to their poor service:

hmm...my friend and I just purchased 2-545i's from Calgary BMW.
Their service was spectacular for me, as soon as I pulled the car out of the lot, I had a flat tire warning show up so I go back and their sales manager comes out to see me as asks if anything was wrong. I tell him what the problem was and he checks the pressure in every tire, calibrates the system and off I went.
They did try to pull some **** with my friend telling him how he needs a NOA, letter from his boss, his managers name and phone number and a whole lot of random stuff. He got pissed off and told them that he was gonna back out of the deal and go buy an Audi, had his manager call their manager (their friends) and all of a sudden their attitude changed and now everything is gonna go through just fine.
                    Got 5?

                          Re: Calgary BMW = Crooks

Canadian Tire has a long standing Contract with RIV, they will install DRL's and inspect it for a low cost. And you're absolutely right Calgary BMW has been accused many times of usery.
My suggestion is stay away from the dealership, if you can get a recall clearance letter from a dealership in the states (if you bought it privately) If not just talk to the boys at the place where you bought it from, I'm in the process of picking up a 04 Range Rover and they were more then willing to help me out with the documentation.

I believe BMW is insisting the clearance letters be from a Canadian dealer now, US ones are not accepted, for whatever reason.

Does anyone know if Mini dealers are selling new cars to Canadians?

I would be doubtful that they are.
