i agree, oil analysis is the only true way to compare. Still not great unless you try a few different things yourself though. I would think even one analysis to the next can vary a lot depending on driving style and current state of engine?
^BINGO. The oil analysis is very useful to determine the condition of your engine, and is only useful for oil comparison if done in the same engine with the same driving conditions.

Richard is the man!! I lived in Edmonton during the summer of '06 and he helped me out so many times with my black '88 Jetta, and then my '00 S4 after I made the upgrade. He did me so many favors and his pricing was soooo reasonable! I can't praise or recommend him enough!

As I understand it.... Syntec is a group 3 oil, which most people agree is a modified petroleum oil and not a "full" synthetic. There has been a LOT of backlash about them labelling a group 3 in this manner........ Because of this "most" people feel Castrol is purposely misleading the public and refuse to use there oils on that basis alone....

It is an OK oil.... but all of the ones that I mention use a proper group 4 (POA) full synthetic basestock.

In January 1998 CASTROL started to use much cheaper hydroprocessed petroleum base oils from SHELL. Mobil lost the opportunity to sell PAO to CASTROL.

Mobil Oil complained to National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus, which in April 1999 finally ruled in CASTROL favor, specifically allowing Syntec® Motor Oil made from SHELL XHVI slack wax stream to be sold and promoted as "synthetic".

          Normally, yes, however....

On this engine in particular there is a HUGE database of UOAs at TDIClub that you can compare to, matching your mods to similar mods on other people's cars. This makes it fairly easy to see if your UOA is good or bad.

This has to be the only forum in existence that has a monthly debate about motor oil. Probably the most technical debate too.

I thought all automotive forums have monthly oil debates. Everyone that I've been to does. Usually though they are little lower on the intelligence spectrum. Like "I've been using the wrong visocisty oil in my gearbox for 27 years and it is perfectly fine. Just let the gearbox warm up for 20 minutes and it is smooth as silk.... "

Go to TDIClub. There are CONTINUOUS and multiple oil debates every day.

Well we haven't had any " I drained my tranny oil rather then my engine oil" threads lately so I figure this makes up for it.
