  • Where to get Oil in Edmonton

    Hi guys,

I am new to Edmonton and this cold climate alike. Just a few quick questions for you.

    1) Where can I find the proper Oil for my Car here in Edmonton (preferably well priced)?

    2) I have always run full synthetic 5W30 CI-4 rated, should I switch to 0W Oil in the middle of winter (hopefully through those temps now)

    3) My car seems to run fine, but I have never had a VAG scan done, should I? If so are there any local gurus that could give me a hand?

Sorry, I thought that would show up when I posted because I had to fill that info in when I joined.

Anyway, it is a 2003 TDI ALH engine.

                Cheaper really?? How much??

The Esso is $23 for 4 liter.

Do they still pawn off the Castrol?? It is junk.

Re: Where to get Oil in Edmonton

thats cheaper. i think dealer castrol is around 8.50/L. I didn't think the esso stuff met CI-4, but I haven't looked in a long time.

Why is Castrol junk? I've seen dealer serviced TDI's with huge mileage, so what problems is it causing?

Just had a fresh search and apparently they now use something decent. They used to sell Syntec, which was not a proper diesel oil and not synthetic.

For whatever reason, they have not currently certified the 0W-40 at all. All the other XD-3 are certified to CI-4. Esso "says" it meets CI-4.

                        http://www.imperialoil.ca/Canada-Eng...Xd-3_extra.pdf

The Shell is not certified either, http://eolcs.api.org/DisplayLicenseI...LicenseNo=0059

You'll also see the Castrol has no API certification.

Here is my latest analsyis on the Esso. Numbers are good. Oil is cheap and easy to find.

IMO, the only comparison to be made is looking at oil analysis. Just because people have high mileage does not mean their engines are not wearing out....

OK, found a datasheet on the Castrol.

Re: Where to get Oil in Edmonton

cheers, i'll read through some of that. i've only bought oil at the dealer maybe 3 times, and it was certified for my TDI, of course they may have used something else before that.
i agree, oil analysis is the only true way to compare. Still not great unless you try a few different things yourself though. I would think even one analysis to the next can vary a lot depending on driving style and current state of engine?

                              Castrol syntec IS full synthetic.
