I Agree, just put the person in jail for attempted murder… had a good friends sister get killed in a hit and run on St. Patrick’s day, guy does not stop after breaking every bone in her body more or less. Drops the car and try’s to run to the UK, not too sure what has happened with the courts and what punishment he got but because it was a hit and run they could not prove he was drunk at the time (he has already be convicted of a drunk driving charge)… somehow just taking your car does not seem like a fair trade when you can take some ones life.

It's a move in the right direction and may deter a few. They won't be just taking your car and then auctioning it off though, this is just another tool in conjunction with all the other ones.

        An analogy:

Person A: Commits murder with a gun he owns. The Gun is legally registered and whatever else you have to do. The gun is worth $100.00.

Person B: Commits murder with a gun he owns. Like 'person A', its all registered etc. His gun was an antique and was worth $20 000.00

They take away both weapons regardless of the price. Would everyone here be talking about what's fair and crying foul?

I can see peoples frustration with the law, the idea that it is a sliding scale and may not stop people from drinking and driving when your car is worth next to nothing. My solution is nowhere near perfect, but I think the point is that it is another tool to make you think twice, like other people I don’t see a big problem with it.

What about an income based fine, they can check your tax records and find out what your monthly/annual salary is and then fine you a percentage of that, thus everyone is impacted in the same manner whether they make 20,000 or 200,000 a year, and cannot drive a cheap car to avoid a loss when caught.

This is true but you also have to think that in conjunction with a suspended license it might help prevent reaccurances because you no longer have a license or a car.

Sounds good on here but I wonder who is going to be the first to say "what if they get paid cash"

I think if they are aiming for a scaled way of fining someone this would be it but I think the whole purpose is to have people think twice because most of us live in the here and now and can picture our car being taken away rather then calculating a fine.
