  • Wireless Network

So I bought a laptop with Vista and I am wanting to set up a wireless network around the house. I have a couple of questions for those who are in the know about this.

    1. Should I go with Wireless G or N or does it really matter?

    2. Are there any problems with networking a PC with XP and a Laptop with Vista?

    3. The laptop comes with Norton 2008. In the past I have not liked Norton as I find it too bulky. Should I ditch it in favour of something like TrendMicro PCcillin which I am using on my desktop right now?

    Thanks,

    Andrew

    Re: Wireless Network

    1. If cost is an issue go with G, if you have a large home or youre wireless router will be int he basement go with N. id go with n

    2. none at all you just have to get a router/switch and set up some sharing if you want to transfer files between the two.

    3. Personal preference, i didnt have a virus killer for over a year and never got a virus, just depends what you think you need. There are good free ones out there if you need one. Norton is certainly not the name it used to be before they got bought out.

G is plenty fast, but if you're buying all new equipment might as well go fastest. But if your laptop already has G builtin, it's not worth the extra funds. PC should stay wired if you already have the jack.

          Re: Wireless Network

It has N & G built in. I bought a G router at Costco today, but I think that I will return it and go with the N. Really fir what I have seen the N routers are not that much more expensive.

The whole house is wired with CAT 5 so, I will keep the PC wired for the time being. I just want the to be able to work with the laptop anywhere in the house.

Kordian, when you say that Norton has changed since they go bought out, does that mean that is a good thing or a bad thing. I used to really hate Norton, but if it has improved I might just keep it.

Does anyone have a N router that they reccommend?

Thanks for all the help guys.

Norton used to be the leader int he filed a few peoples opinion but when they go bought they sat back too much and just became another also ran.

bah theres not many that are different now anyways, still i think there are plenty capable free ones out there that mean you dont have to buy and license one.

The range can be better with N as well.
