  • Winter rubber - Marketplace

Interesting Marketplace on CBC. Just enforcing what most of us here know. All seasons are good until 5-7 degrees, and thats it. Traction in all conditions goes down after this temp. In the end, cheapest winter rubber out there has better traction then an all season in winter conditions. They did some quick tests to show stopping/going differences, defiantly worth while.

The point of the show was more or less to show that rental companies are dumbasses for telling people to take an SUVs (among other interesting comments) because they don't do winter tires.

Winters are law in Quebec now too. didn't know.

about time.. winters are the law in europe.. really the problem here is that it warms and cools so much the roads are 90% fine most of the time.. its the crappy day when it dumps or hits -30 and ices for the week

either way i finally put mine on and just put some on the wifes car too.. money well spent

I have been trying to tell people that for years. Hopefully people will start to listen and we can get stupid accidents down.

This is a myth - even in Calgary. Sure it's not icy all winter like out east, but really, how many days does it stay above 8C after Nov 1st? I don't mean hits 8 at 2pm, I mean it's 8C when you drive to work or drive home. Not very often, and frankly winter tires are just fine in slightly warmer weather. It's not the road condition it's the ambient temp!

I used to wait for the snow, now it's switch mid october and they stay on until late april.

You can buy "cheap" winters and "cheap" summers, not have to shell out that much more cash but will grip better all year round.

Agree with winter tires, better safety feature than airbags or ABS.
