Re: Supplements? Any sports gurus here?

As Of The First I Have Also Been Attemting To Change The Belly Growing Habits. Smoking Has Been The First Step (7 Days So Far) And I've Been Trying To Be More Active. Never Been That Good Of A Skater But Been Hitting The Rink Near My Place Over The Last Few Days And Found Muscles I Never Knew I Had. Also Took A Bail And Ko'd Myself, I've Come To The Realization That A Helmet Is A Good Idea, Haha. Been Looking To Get Into Better Shape But I Haven't Ever Worked Out And I'm Clueless As Where To Start. Any Pointers For A Beginner? This Seems To Be A Good Post So Far.

Edit: specifically stomach and arm routines?

Re: Supplements? Any sports gurus here?

A lot of the comments on this thread have been great... others not so much .

If you plan on doing any sort of weight training, having a solid diet will provide you with 70-80% of the results. Eat plenty of lean foods (bot DON'T starve yourself), such as chicken, and mix in a good protein shake right after your workout. It's important that you have a good 30grams of Protein within approx 15 min of the end of your workout. Unlike what others said, this does help in recovery & growth which is extremely important. Although Muscle Milk is great, it's unique in that it's a slow release protein, and thus isn't the right protein type for right after a workout. With that said, it's a great midmorning shake to have... as the protein will release much more slowly.

If your serious about this, you can also add other supplements... but they are less important than just a good diet and some solid whey protien.

As for a training schedule, someone posted a good one on page 1. You can basically do combo workouts where you hit multiple areas on one day (great for beginners or mixing things up), or you can do more isolation workouts. Note - You can do Arms on their own day, or you can do Triceps on Chest day, and Biceps on Back day.

      My current regimen:

Day1 - Chest and Tri's. Dumbell press, Incline benchpress, Incline dumbell fly's, tricep extensions, dips, and finish off with pushups.

Day 2 - Legs - Squats (make sure you have proper form, or you'll kill your knees), Lunges, etc....

Day3 - Back & Biceps - Deadlift (make sure you have proper form!!! or you'll regret it), lateral fly's, lat pulldown, Cable Rows, Cheat Curls, Seated Dumbell Curls, etc....

As for Abs, I mix them in on various days......
Sidewalks are for normal walkin.... aint no room for fancy walkin....

... and we're back to the difference between a dad with a FT job, wife and kids vs 5+ time a week gym rats. You and nixon would seriously would tell some dude just coming off the couch to spend an hour a day doing snatches/deads, maybe get on an ECA stack or clen? Get real. You could give wrist curls their own day, wouldn't mean you'd lose weight, and it wouldn't mean he'd stick with it.

I went from 30%+bf to ~13% with just cardio/tri-training last year. Nothing spectacular to some people, but for me going from absolutely nothing to running 300+kms and biking over 2k in 2007 made me happy. That makes me keep going. That is the key. This year I'm aiming for double.

Volks - an average normal person looking to shed a few pounds, and look a little better naked doesn't need more than 30-45 mins of hard activity 3x a week and cleaner eating. But maintaining it for life is the trick as 80%+ of people gain the weight back within 3 years.

This year I'm adding in more weights before my runs/bikes but nothing like some of the hulks do in the gym. And there's nothing wrong with what they do either -it's what you want as results. Maybe you will decide to go for strength and lifting. Maybe a pro arm wrestler. Maybe do the Ironman. But start small and choose your path. Forget sups and buying expensive equipment until you know what you want to do.

I have a full time job as well, 9 hour days. I spend 1.5 hours a day in the gym.
Haha oh and yes I'm currently on an ECA stack and it's worked wonders, I was 226lbs a year ago, with no muscle and now I'm at a lean 180.

Of course I wouldn't recommend ECA to older guys like you, but don't try to tell me I don't know my ****.

I didn't say do deads for an hour, I said lift weights for an hour if you want real results. Stop being so defensive.

          Either way Dave, good luck.

Re: Supplements? Any sports gurus here?

The key is to actually stick to what you do. You won't notice it right away. Most results are seen over time. Track what you do in order to provide motivation.

              The gist of things are:
              - do something physical on a regular basis
              - eat well - either supplements, or not, but just focus on the diet

Basically the biggest thing is breaking rules, it's easy to do. Charting progress also means you have something to look at other than thinking you have done something.

Re: Supplements? Any sports gurus here?

I think another big key is to keep it simple and fun, I have been both the guy that spends 1.5hr in the gym and the guy that only has 45min to get his work out in (once I started my eng degree). If you start out at the gym and you are doing 1.5hr and eating nothing but rice and chicken I am willing to bet (I may be wrong) that you won't last to long because it won't be fun. Try to make it something you enjoy, thats how I got into it... if it is fun next thing you know you are up there for 1.5hr seeing great results.

Another great way to get your cardo in is to pick up a sport, I always find that riding the bike is fine but it gives you time to think about all the things you should be doing and I end up leaving 15mins early. I know you (Dave) talked about picking up hockey, that is a great way to get fit (if you skip the beers in the locker room after)

IT, it's a hard life. And I wasn't referring to myself anyway - I have no kids, yet. I can still get away with playing video games etc for hours every now and then.

I just get annoyed when "experts" recommend absurd things to beginners. It's like a guy who says he'd like to learn how to run, so super-jock tells him to start a 12 week marathon training program. That's why so many people give up working out.
