  • Traveling to the Netherlands

Thinking about going to the Netherlands to travel around a bit and just wondering where some of you have been? I'd like to go to the Hague and maybe a couple other stops in Holland but was also thinking about Gelderland and some of the eastern provinces also. Anyone travel places other than Holland? Would probably spend the better part of a week in the Netherlands and then I'm hoping to go to Finland to visit a friend. I'm not a big club person so not that interested in the night life, but we would be interested in beer tours and such.

    thanks for the input.

    Re: Traveling to the Netherlands

Even though I'm from there, I've never been to the eastern part of Netherlands....Only around the Holland region for me. There's the usual stops, Amsterdam (red light district, Kavelstraat, coffee shops, Heineken brewery, Ajax stadium, Madam Tussaud's museum, war monument, Rembrandtplein, Rijks Museum), Schevinengen, The Hague, etc. I know it sounds dumb, but I would recommend Madurodam aswell, its a miniature land! Super cool stuff to see.

When you're going may also be noteworthy, because of what you'll see....In the spring you may want to spend more time in the countryside, as there is much more to see with the bloom and all. In the winter you may be better served by just hitting the train and urban spelunking!

    Must haves:
Croquettes (yes, McDonalds has a McCroquette burger)
    Beer at McDonalds
Amstel and Heineken beer (both are different than the "import" stuff we drink here, and super cheap, about 7EU for a flat!)
    Worrelnoten (peanuts......but good)
Salted Herring, with the onion! There are little street vendors selling these all the time, they are amazing because they're fresh, not like here
    Coffee, its amazing
Obviously cheese and licorice (not at the same time...)

If I think of more places I will post them up Jason

      Re: Traveling to the Netherlands

Cool thanks Alex, maybe you can elaborate on some of the places you listed. Part of the reason I was thinking of going to Gelderland was to see something a lot of tourists wouldn't see but also because I would like to take in one of the War monuments there but I could probably go to the one in Holland also.

This may all change though once I find out where my cousins live as I might try to stay with them.

Yeah man netherlands is dope. I got family mostly in Friesland and Groningen. There isnt toooo much up there to do. Like wide open prairies. But the locals are always super keen to share a story or two.

          Hey jason,
I was born in Holland and lived there until I was 6 years old. Its an amazing country with great people and beautiful sights. I would reccommend everything Alex said. I love people watching and I think Amsterdam is ther greatest place in the world for that. Make sure you bring back some Dropjes for me (bllack licorice).

          Cheers
