  • GM vs VW Engines!

I've always been a big fan of VW/Audi engines. I can say without a doubt that this was a big reason I bought my first VW.

Was reading about the new Cobalt SS from GM...

    GM 2.0T 260hp
    VW 2.0T 200hp

I'm the first to say that the Cobalt does not compare to the GTI in terms of comfort, materials, styling, etc etc. But VW has really dropped the ball if GM can come out with a production 2.0L Turbocharged engine that really is this much quicker than VW's, even with all the technology VW puts into its engines!

well audi has that engine making 265hp.... and in TT rs its gonna be what, 285 or 300? vw has just detuned it on purpose.

edit: its an ecotec engine, and ecotec was made by opel i think which gm now owns. so really think of it as another german engine, not american.

Its pretty simple why the ecotec makes more power. The ecotec uses a K04 turbo rather than the VW's K03, plus it runs considerably higher boost. In stock trim, the ecotec peaks at about 20psi, whereas the VW 2.0T peaks about about 12psi. Baseline dynos for the ecotec have been showing around 225whp which is pretty close to what you'd get out of a 2.0T with an upgraded chip, which would make boost levels much more similar. So basically the difference is just a matter of tuning. VW has decided to keep thier engine more "detuned", probably in the interest of long term durability and to give them more options down the road for increasing power on newer models.

GM is finally on the right road. Course Audi/VAG competes but you need to buy an S3 to get it. But it's not like VW played the hp game anyway, we were beat by the Neon SRT years ago. I personally don't care as I find my mk4 with 200ish hp is more than enough for what I do.

Funny thing is this engine is going to show up in saturns, and who knows what else. A few more years I'm gonna get beat by everything (even Camcords are all 250+ hp).

GM's interiors are becoming top notch, for example the old CTS was disgusting but the new one is being compared easily to Audi/Merc. Even the new Vette is leaps ahead of the old one (blech!!).

New Pontiac G8 holds to the 335i within hairs and is a lot cheaper, but no longer looks it. I will seriously be looking at this car if we get it here. Love it.

Should be noted that this factory Cobalt has run the Nurburgring faster than the 2001+ M3.

GM will still be GM to me... They always have to look to to other auto makers for inspiration. Any and all domestic vehicles made after 1947 suck IMO.

I think the thing with engines like the SRT4 is that they were more about brute force, being of considerably larger displacement. 2.4L vs 1.8L Turbo and not as much technology in the engine (for example direct injection). I think turbo lag was also much different. But with the ecotec, they've really surpassed VW with the engine technology for the first time in a hp/displacement and efficiency standpoint.

Did you even read my thread? This has absolutely nothing to do with technology. Its the simple fact that if you put a bigger turbo on the motor and turn up the boost, it will make more power. Not exactly rocket science.

I think you're short there by about 23 years.

Vw is overdue for a power increase in their 2.0t's. Why cant we get the detuned s3 motor like europe has in the 30ae gti's? Even 230hp would be mid pack for that price segment now.

Plus as mike has said, its just a bigger turbo running more boost so how is that all going to hold up in the thick of things?

I just want to say that this is probably my last vw that I will have, unless somehow I get money to buy W12. VW Gti had been in my family for over 20 years, starting from 1982 and mkI, till now. Those older VW's, up to mkIII were somewhere keeping up with the competition. After mkIII and somewhere fast vr6, when it comes to speed VW is a pure joke. They became so heavy that even if they have 200hp now, is still not enough to make them fast. If I have +30K now, I would probably buy Solstice or even Sky, rather than Gti again.

                              Re: GM vs VW Engines!

I agree with Kor, VW just doesnt seem intereted interested in producing performance inspired vehicles.

If you look at articles in Road and Track or other testdrive style magazines, VW always takes a big hit in regards to performance compared to other vehicles in their class. Often, VW makes has to make up for lost points in the styling department or cockpit layout and quality.

Don't get me wrong, I love VW styling and I love the quality materials they use in the cabin, but performance is very important aswell. For alot less money compared to the GTI, people can get themselves a Neon SRT4, SRT Caliber, Cobalt SS, Mazda Speed 3, Saturn Redline ect ect.

Hell, even VW's benchmark R32 can't even compete with its competition. YES I realize the STI and Evo both have forced induction and the R32 doesn't, but that doesnt stop all three cars from being grouped together in the same class.

I highly doubt I will buy another VW after I get rid of the 20th.
