    Re: GM vs VW Engines!

I thought the Ecotec has been around since the early days of the sunfire/cavalier? I could be wrong. Turboing it is pretty new I guess. speaking of which, I saw a turbo Saturn Sky the other day. Call me crazy but I really like the look of that car. Reminds me of a VX220(?).

A salesman once told me that the Redline/Cobalt SS motor was from a Saab but was supercharged rather than turbo'd.

And I'll agree, the "all other cars are crap" gets a bit old after a while.

Sky/Solstice are based closely on it - Lotus built it for GM under their Vauxhall badge. They are pretty amazing on their own but the trunk design is just madness (ie, useless).

        Re: GM vs VW Engines!

The 2007 Cobalt SS was supercharged it is the new 2008 that is turbo and I think will not actually be available to people till first quarter 2008.

I am personally more interested to see what happens with the potential Astra Redline.

          Re: GM vs VW Engines!

On the topic of the cobalt, I had one as a rental lately. On one level the car was a lot better than recent gm products. The car rode well and had a fairly resonable delivery of power. Within town the car actually wasn't too bad.

Then, came a bit of wind at freeway speeds, the car hunted like mad, it was incredible. And, after putting two bags in the back, not totalling 100lb, the front was seeking all the time without wind. The steering was so light my g/f damn near gave me whiplash as the car wandered about. The seats felt like they came out of a '47 pickup.

All of that being said, it was world's ahead of previous inexpensive chevies, the engine/tranny combo was respectable for an entry level model of an entry level car.

Personally, a performance Diesel from VW has the chance to get me back in their cars...

sky/soltice are doing great in the racing world but they are a lot further from a VX220 than you might think. For a start, the engine is in the other end of the car.

The turbo ecotec in the 2008 is also Direct Injection with a redesigned head. It is a major revision to the engine imo.

I wonder if they are using the spark plugs as ionic probes too, saab has been doing that for a while with their versions of the Ecotecs

BINGO! Could'nt have said it any better.

An example of this (off the top of my head), is the Audi TT (225). This car was not cheap on the dealer ship floor, nor is it cheap used. One would think, for the money being spent on a somewhat exclusive sport inspired vehicle made by a higher end manufacturer such as Audi, that it would be a solid all around car. However, cars that cost half the cost of a TT outperform it.

Please keep in mind that im comparing performance ONLY!

Since you used the TT225 as an example, I'll play along. Just because its the way I am, I'll play the exact opposite of your argument. I agree that at the time it was made, the TT225 could be outperformed by vehicles costing considerably less. So why did he car cost so much you ask? You were paying for the style. At the time it introduced, the TT's styling was simply stunning. There was absolutely nothing else on the road like it. The interior was another huge selling point for this car, especially the basball stitched leather seats and the huge amounts of real brushed aluminum on the dash. The car was arguably more stylish and attractive than cars costing 2-3 times as much. Audi isn't dumb, they knew this, so you payed a premium for the car considering its so-so performance. Audi isnt the only brand doing this, look at Alfa Romeo, stylish underperforming cars that cost a lot of money, and you know what, people still buy them becuase thats what some people want. Not everyone is after raw performance and numbers.

I know this is completely off the original topic, but I like to argue with Pablo

                          yup..

people buy audis because of the styling and the interiors are simply the best materials... now only if the 2.7t with k04s was in every car

Whats the torque number comparison between the mk5 gti and the cobalt SS? I dont know about you guys, but personally for a car thats fun to drive around the city I think torque is waaaaay more important than HP.
