  • Re: Earlier thread about gas stations...

hey, get this guys, the other day I hit up A&W for a delicious teen burger and as I'm waiting in the drive through, I look across the street at the Fast Gas and see a 'super-B' unloading a shipment of fuel. I had to do a double take because to my amazement the trailers were labeled with both Class 3 (Flammable liquids) placards, AND GET THIS!... Class 4 (Flammable Solids) placards.

This might not seem like much but it also had MOLTEN SULFUR STICKERS ON IT!>!>

WTF?! I couldn't believe it. After I was done at A&W I went past the Fast Gas to get a better look. Sure enough it had both sets of placards. So I snapped another picture with my shitty cell camera.

I wasn't able to get a picture showing the UN# on the solid red placards (class 3: Gas) but it was probably gasoline or diesel. UN2448 is molten sulfur though (under: Sulfur, Molten) Thats un-freakin real. I will be sending a letter to someone about this. Having chunks of sulfur floating around in your fuel does not help your car (or probably the environment either).

Now you might be thinking "sh!t it's a good thing i don't go to Fast Gas". But no word of a lie a few days after I saw the exact same thing at the Esso, probably even the same truck.

I'm over reacting? Do you know what molten sulfur is? I work in a plant that removes it from the fuels (Diesel, etc) it produces, these are the same trucks that transport it. These guys should face hefty fines for possibly contaminating thousands of liters of fuel and possibly damaging peoples cars. You think they wash these trailers out every time they switch loads? They don't do it very well if at all, because that ain't free after all. When you've worked in the petroleum industry on a few different levels you start to understand what goes on behind the scenes. Its just not this blatantly obvious usually.

Westcan is the Carrier. This unit is affectionately known as a "POODLE".....as it looks like a big, shaved poodle.

The trailers are actually "trailers within trailers"...an innovative design. They haul gasoline or diesel one way.....drop it off as you can see in the picture.....then drive to a nearby plant and load the other sections of each trailer with Molten Sulphur. They then haul it to Edmonton area.

This is known as a backhaul....good deal for truckers as they pay both ways....and good deal for each Shipper as each gets a cut in trucking rate.

The Placards have to show BOTH....as residue/retain of each product is always on board. But they do not mix."

                      Straight from the top folks.

ok, that makes perfect sense, Thanks. But how do the residues not mix?

Re: Earlier thread about gas stations...

Tank trailers designed for molten sulphur are generally dedicated to hauling molten sulphur. A tank that has just carried molten sulphur cannot be easily cleaned so that the trailer can carry a different commodity on the return trip or to another destination. The result is that the tank is full on the delivery trip but is empty on the return trip. To maximize what is known as "loaded miles", a specially designed tank trailer combines a tank for molten sulphur and a bulk carrier. On one trip, the trailer carries molten sulphur and on the return trip carries a bulk commodity such as fertilizers. This type of trailer is called a backhaul double and is used in the Florida region by fertilizer manufacturers to improve the trucking economics. Backhaul doubles are also used in western Canada but instead of a sulphur/bulk carrier, a sulphur/fuel carrier is used.

That was the most I could find. I'm glad I was unnecessarily concerned in this case.

Yeah the tanks are designed with compartments or something like that. Its better for them to minimize the number of back and forth trips even if one the compartments is sometimes empty.
