  • Getting a US car across the boarder

Ok so how do you do this ?

First off, TRADING CARS, how do you do this? I'm assuming when you write the Bill of sales you just put the same price on both ? and dont exchange the money? Or would you put on hte bill of sale you traded?

And then getting it back across the boarder into Canada.
First off, its gonna need insurance I guess so you can ever drive it, put the plate on your 'old' car and use the same insurance? Or can you get a temporary tag from your insurance company before going?

then you have to "import" it, I have heard that you have to inform RIV or whoever 48hours before you import it. Is that true?

this confuses the crap out of me. I would be driving down to the states, and 'trading' cars and driving the 'new' one back into Canada if that helps any.

    confused?

and by car i mean truck

it's not that hard if you buy used, you'll have to get an in transit sticker and i
    believe you still pay G.S.T.
MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE MEETS CANADIAN STANDARDS.
then you go to Canadian tire for an out of country inspection and then have to go for an out of province inspection.
have all recalls checked and signed off by a dealer on their letterhead.

If thats the car (truck) it will be over 15 years old so no import restriction. If doing a trade do bill(s) of sale for the same price each then you should be good. You will need a transit permit and insurance to get it up, pay GST and possibly duty at the border. Come home get it inspected and you are good. Some people here can give you the specifics but on an older not so expensive car you should have no issues.

so you just pay GST on whatever you 'paid' for the vehicle im guessing ?
How much would duties be around?

So when you are coming back accross the boarder crossing do you have to claim it to them then ?

Duty is typically around 6% but it is based on where the car was built. These things need to be paid when crossing the border.
