Garage Door Spring

A spring on top of my garage door just broke tonight after I came home from work. Does anyone have an idea about how much it will cost to get it replaced by someone? Or if anyone has done it themselves how involved is the process and do I need any special tools?

Its not very much money but it can be deadly if you do it yourself seeing that spring has to be cranked to some pretty high tension.

I asked an installer one time what it would cost, he said 50 for the spring and 50 for labor.

yep, spring is $40 - $50
replacing it is sort of a pain if you don't have the proper tools.
nothing like having a screwdriver (wrong tool) launch into your body.
the tools are just 2 solid round stock bars about 1.5' to wind/unwind springs, and wrenches.

All Kind Doors did ours.

Don't do it yourself unless you wanna get killed. those things are a complete b$tch to work with and tension.

If you promise not to hurt yourself too bad then do it yourself and videotape it. Since you will be in hospital after.....get a friend to take the tape and put it up on youtube so we can all watch it.

OR

Hire another sucker to do it for you. Hopefully a sucker with training and the proper tools. Tape him, just in case. I still want to see youtube footage of a screw up.

No we are getting pro's in, just looking to see if someone had any suggestions as to who.

Call cathy at calgary overhead doors.
but you do have to video tape the guys that fix it,
the entertainment was worth the price all that was missing was a banjo.
but their work was awesome.
