  • Interview tips?!

Interview tomorrow for a position at a new branch...

Anyone here in charge of hiring? Any tips as for what you guys look for in a candidate? I have all the qualifications, just want to know what extra little somethings I can do to make myself stand out...

It'll be mainly behavioral, which I HATE, do you guys have any good example questions??

    Thanks dudes
I'd like to make a statment!

              Re: Interview tips?!

I'm sort-of in charge of interviewing...

I would say that being relaxed is a big deal. You should also be willing to admit when you don't know something, but then follow that up with some explanation of how you would learn it or how you would handle such a problem. Never guess and then state your guess as though you know what you are talking about. Don't pretend to know things either.

You should make an effort to dress comfortably but also dress nicely. Being nice looking but uncomfortable always makes your interview go badly, in my opinion.

You should have some questions to ask the interviewer. Some of the best candidates actually ask more questions than I do (good ones).

Confidence is key. I definately look for people with knowledge in his/her field but ultimately I want to see a very confident individual. Show them why they need you not why you need them. Just don't be cocky. Good luck!

                  Re: Interview tips?!

                  Behavioral interviews are always fun.

Usually the questions are geared towards any of the competencies (knowledge / skills / abilities) that are listed on the posting. If there was no posting, then you are a bit of a loss and will have to try to guess about what they are looking for.

For a competency of "time management", any question you may get will be trying to assess how good you are at it. For example, "Tell me about a time that you had conflicting priorities. What was the situation, and what did you do?"

From my perspective, in behavioral interviews, it's not so much what your example is as giving the interviewer(s) enough information to understand the situation you were involved in. Almost like story time. What they are looking for is to really understand what you were experiencing and then how you handled it. The key is what YOU did. The theory behind behavioral interviewing is that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior.

Other's are right...relax. If you don't have a recent or relevant work example for the question, let them know that and then provide something out of your personal life. Again, they are looking for behavior in a situation related to the competency.

Silence is ok. You don't have to feel that you need to fill it. Maybe take a notepad and pen with you. Try to jot down key points of the questions so you can stay on-topic. I saw that from one candidate and was impressed by that.

                  That's a bit for you......good luck!

Oh...and sometimes they want more than one example for each competency, so be prepared for that...

                    Wow thanks guys!
I really wish I would have brought the posting home with me, it does have a list of competencies on it.

Interview is at 6pm in Canmore! The hiring manager is filling in at Canmore branch for the week and asked "How do you feel about coming up to Canmore for the interview, say, tomorrow?"

I'm not sure if that was some sort of test, but I agreed immediately.

6pm Interview, so I'll spend some time tomorrow thinking of examples of possible questions asked for each competency. I'll post them up tomorrow, maybe you guys can give some examples of what YOU would ask.

                    Thanks again!
