  • Calgary Election Thread

Since there is only 2 weeks to go before we go to the polls I thought I would open up a discussion on issues and concerns over the issues facing our city. The last couple years have seen a huge amount of change in this city and thus I think this election is one of the most important we have had and I encourage everyone to vote on October 15th!!

I have been a Calgarian my entire life and I think the recent changes have hurt this city and I think we need people running it who can better manage what is going on. I think Bronco has done an OK job but I think his ideas and plans have become stale and I really think this city needs fresh leadership.

Please feel free to comment on Mayoral candidates and Alderman as well.

    Re: Calgary Election Thread

Well I admit I have not been following this too closely but so far I am disappointed in all of the candidates. I did some limited research into their campaigns on their web pages, and they assume a pretty low level of intelligence. It seems to me like all of the candidates are just pandering to the masses and making empty campaign promises.

One candidate (I won't name them) promises to increase spending on the C-train by 20%. Then on the same page, they say they will do more to improve Calgary's roads than their predecessor. Yet, if you drill down into their budget - the 20% they propose to spend on the c-train comes directly out of the road budget. I'd like to know how they can improve our roads by spending 20% less on them. I realize that there is a limited amount of money out there, but I think that the way the information is presented makes it sound like they are promising to BOTH improve the C-train AND the rate of road infrastructure improvement, which is not the case.

So much "Campaign Language" is out there, it makes me a little sick. I don't want to hear that someone promises to "find practical 'made in Calgary' solutions to our problems". WTF does that mean?

Honestly I am a bit jaded and I think that most of the candidates are probably a lot like our existing leadership (even if they are new people). I haven't seen anyone actually identify problems that I see on a daily basis. I haven't seen anyone propose a radical solution.

I'd like to see some concrete problems and solutions laid out, not just vague promises.

I liked Bronco when he first ran but I get this weird feeling that he might be a little corrupt now. I think its easy to be caught up in the boom of Calgary and to feel like you're riding high up in the clouds. I also think its pretty easy to just go with the easy decisions and not shake things up. I'd like to see a Mayor who actually upsets people because he is pushing crazy things through in order to make change happen. If you do the same thing you've always done, you're a fool to expect anything to be different, right?

after doing some research on enmax i cannot even think about voiting for Bronco. yes it made us $14million last year.....too bad if run right it could make $144million. That guy has too much of an alterior motive to all of the things he does. He is clearly looking to make a run for the premiere's job sooner or later and is just positioning himself at the moment to do so.

He needs to be removed so we have someone with a clear mandate

I'm sick of working on his Touareg too.. He gets his minions to drop it off whenever he needs service. I met him once when he decided to pick it up himself.

As an aside, why does a municipal government own a for-profit corporation? Yes, it makes money right now, so everything is good... but if it starts declaring losses it's the taxpayer who will bail it out... and heads will roll.

Bronco is the only viable option. He got our billions from the province so those extra taxes the opponents are worried about will be scrapped. Traffic is my main concern and that's his focus as well. Anyone bitching about the construction needs to remember that we had the Duer years of doing absolutely nothing - the Glenmore disaster should have been done a decade ago and the west leg of the C-Train was planned in the 90s.

They are all crooks. You always hope that some politician will uphold his word and really care about the people. Yet it seems the only time the peoples interests come into play is when it's nearing election or re-election time, throw the peasants a bone and you can get some more votes out of the deal. I've given up on politics and the hope that someone is out there to do us good, and stick up for the rights of the people, it's bulls#$@!!! One of the highest tax rates in the world yet as surplus's rise so will our taxes, how the f*** does that work. True this is above the municipal candidates heads but they all climb out of the same pile of shite. Reminds me of that Capital One commercial where the bankers are like rats out for everyones money. Should have been politicians. LOL
