    Any car stereo gurus out there?

    If I were wiring up a Metra harness to the harness that comes off the back of an after market Head Unit (hypothetically of course {and by hypothetically I mean actually}). Would I just match the colors of the wires together, eg. Orange to Orange, Blk to Blk etc?

    typically, yes... but double checking against a diagram would be a good thing, if that were an option, hypothetically.

        Most of the aftermarket harnesses are the same now and so are the adapters but your adapter should have come with a wiring sheet (or it is on the package) It doesn't hurt to double check it.

          hmmm, the Headunit harness is labeled and marked quite good but there was no instructions with the Metra harness, I'll take some pictures and get back to you guys, thanks for the info

              ok, I got another question...

              The harness for the head unit has a blue (with white stripe) wire marked "system remote" and the Metra harness has one (same color) marked "amp turn on". Do I connect these together?

              Thanks for the link Brent but I couldn't find any specific info, the .pfd on that site was the same little paper that came with it. I looked a bit closer and the Metra harness has the name of every wire stamped on them. The head unit instructions have a wiring diagram also so i should be good to go for the most part.

                remote should = the switch for the amp, yes.

                  sexellent, ill try it,

                  I have another question or two...

                  Stock sub: In my A4 there is a stock sub in the back, do I use the two wires coming off my headunit that will work the rear speakers in parallel with the sub? or do I just wire the rear speakers as per normal? I'm thinking I should go with the first option because I can't see any wires on the metra harness for the sub.

                  Power wires: There seems to be two positive 12volt leads on the the metra and headunit harness' (yellow and red).
                  Red is ignition and yellow is constant. Correct?

                    you should get a test light

                    you wont have anything for a sub coming off an aftermarket head unit. they usually give you RCA leads that go to an amp that will power the sub. i'm not sure how you can hook up the sub otherwise. you have rear right and rear left, and they are stero so the signal is different.. you cant really parallel the sub to them. you can, but sound quality may not be the best, and you may stress the head unit a bit because you won't be running a 4ohm circuit anymore. IMO, best bet would be to find a small amp...

                      on second thought.. maybe there is a stock amp thats all wired in the car already.. and hooking up the two speakers normal will all work out?? better wait for someone who knows how your stock sub is wired.

                        It is best not to use a test light in newish cars. A multimeter is the way to go. If I remmeber correctly I once read an article about test lights having a greater chance of setting off air bags if used on the wrong wires. I always forget which is which on the yellow and red but just use whichever the deck colour is. As fopr the sub I have no idea, if could be amplified with a high level (speaker) input that just runs one set of speaker wires in then another out to the actual speaker.

                          good point w/ airbags i guess. i'm pretty confident that yellow and red are 12v power and should be safe to test with a light though. some of us just have ghetto electronic tools to work with, so ya take yer chances .

                              ok, got it all soldered together, i hooked the head unit up to the car to see if it would work and... nothing...
                              I looked at the factory harness and the metra harness a bit closer and noticed there are a fair few pins that don't match up when the factory harness' are inserted into the metra harness'...

                              Is this normal? Obviously I'm going to need to move a couple pins, anyone know how to get them out of the plastic "conecticazoink"?
