  • Ontario: 50km/h over limit = bye bye car!

For example 130km/hr in an 80km/hr or 150km/hr on deerfoot would not just be a ticket or a suspension, they want to seize and crush your car. No matter whether you are street racing or not, the move is to say that 50km/hr over automatically means a street racing conviction.

    http://www.leftlanenews.com/canada-3...et-racing.html

This has happened, its on the books!

Police in ON can seize your car without a warrant and without even witnessing or having evidence that you engage in street racing. All they need is a modded car that they can say has "probably been built" for street racing.

In reality, grandpa in his cadillac won't get his car crushed for street racing if he does 50km/hr over, they will just give him a speeding ticket, but any modded car that speeds over 50km/h over the limit will be cited for street racing and seized on the spot. Double standard.

"Last week, Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant started a heated debate over street racing when he said police had the right to seize and destroy any car that has been modified for street racing — without a warrant."

    so mods are illegal too?

I have been watching this the last little while and it seems that the Government/Police is going a tad too far, but perhaps we will see some cases going to the higher level courts as I would think this has some rights violations.

I think somethings need to be done to help curb street racing but taking and destroying vehicles because they have performance mods is just ridiculous. In theory they could seize almost every car in thic club and say they were modded for street racing purposes.

I'd be curious to see what the stats are for street racing deaths VS. Drunk driving Deaths. IMO this policy should be aimed at drunk driving. Busted for a dui means no car for a year or car is gone forever.

I don't see how if your ccar is modded it means your going to be racing. I mean if you buy an M5 are they going to crush it because its a modded 5 series. Some of these ppl need to really think before they speak. As if the police are going to be able to just pull you over because your car is lowered, seize it and destroy it net alone if you were not breaking any laws. I could see a lot of people just not stopping for the police in that case.

Thats a good point, going hardcore against racers while the drunks are allowed to carry one with not the same level of repercussions.

never even thought about this! +1 for this suggestion!

there better be some criteria on what's classified as modified for racing. it's too vague. i can see a lot of power trips from the police on this one... oh those are the ultra high performance (racing) tires! i think you have those on for racing. what deems a car modification as "racing"?

Wow... if my car ever got into a situation like this, you better believe I would be bringing this to a higher court of appeal.

Good point about the Drunk Driving as well. My brother is a police recruit in Edmonton, and was smoked by a Drunk Driver on the way home from training about 2 months ago. This was the chic's third DUI conviction and she was still driving !!!!

do they not realize that most 'street racing' accidents and deaths result from junior out in mommy and daddy's SUV or bimmer/benz and racing anything that moves?

This is just going to lead to

                      - Dummies and kids trying to flee from the cops
                      - Car thefts (why not steal a car?)
                      - Other crime (more tempting to buy stolen parts or turn to crime to fund a race car)

Re: Ontario: 50km/h over limit = bye bye car!

i know there has already been half a dozen deaths from people running stop signs here, or around the city. i think street racing has none. the gov can't change its poor driving instructions anymore so they police the next best thing. street racing is a form of careless driving. so is not signaling, running stop signs, poorly merging, you get the idea.

it's time for the police/politicians to start looking at the whole picture, and not just lump a car with mods into one category, which, i think, has the fewest death rates for traffic accidents and infringements. every ticket you get is trackable. you can track trends in ones' driving habits by flagging their licence. two speeding, one running a stop sign, indicates a "careless trend". clearly the offender has no regard for those laws, or any at that. he deserves his car destroyed. the DUI example is a great one too. so are Kor's alternatives for evasion.

so after three "careless" type tickets, a third Careless Driving Charge is added. thats gonna be a big hit in the pocket and i'd like to think that that would deter someone a little more. hiding behind some trees catching dudes speeding is a waste of time. i'd have to say that not signaling is by far my worst pet peeve in calgary driving. give those morons a few tickets.

                        my 2 pennies.
you probably don't like me because someone else said they didn't lol. <3

So are the cops going to hire some young hipster with his hat on sideways that can tell the police "yo pig, that car is so dope" so they will know which ones are modified?

wouldn't ya think there are more old guys with classics done up to the nuts that never drive them over the limit that would get hurt by this? sounds like the guy had a personal bad experience with a street racer...
