  • Restaurant Reviews...

I have to think of a place to take my wife for her B-day, so I thought would start a thread on some Restaurant Reviews.

For those who like Greek Food, "The Broken Plate" in Crowfoot is excellent. Great Greek food, and a nice "lively" but "classy" atmosphere. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, but it's great inside.

          Saint Germain (French)
It is connected to Hotel Arts. The food was very good and for 'fine' dinning the price was not to bad ($180 for wine, appetizer, entree, desert and coffee for 2 people). The only thing I found was the table we got was near the back and the lighting was not that great. It is along the same lines as Catch Restaurant or River Cafe.

It was listed as one of Canada's top 10 new restaurants.

Teatro, Capo, Catch, Murietta's, The Ranche, River Cafe, Ric's Grill, Red Water, St. Germain, Cilantro, Rouge, Wildwood, Velvet, Chilli Club Thai House, The King and I, The Verve...and the list goes on
I've been to almost all of these places and never really had a bad meal anywhere, so you should be pretty safe

The King and I is very nice and is well priced for what you get. I really liked Catch but my girlfriend thought that it was over priced (but all seafood is in this city). Rive Cafe is one of my favorites, Wildwood has a very nice dinning room and if you are looking for a more relaxed bar setting they have a pub downstairs that has great food along with micro brewed beer (other then the Hepatitis A).

                  Some of my faves,

Wellingtons, just north of southland, amazing with very proffesional waiters.
Teatros, If your feeling rich, maybe more for an aniversary than a birthday though.
The Verve, was good but its shut down now. I think youd have to go to vancouver now
Oceana, near eau clair for seafood or greek inspired selections, sea bass is awesome
Sumo Lounge, in Eau Claire for sushi
If you havent been the Calgary Tower is a novelty but they do have excellent food.

and a bunch more, there is such a high selection in calgary now, its great
                  Eric..

the verve is still open in mission, the other 2 locations shut down. bought by penny lane for new ceili's locations from what i hear. i forgot to mention one of the best in calgary, il sogno. it will cost you an arm and a leg, but it is totally worth it. some of the best italian food you have ever had. talking about italian, theres a really fun place in kensington called pulcinella. its a naples inspired pizza joint, but its a really nice sit-down type of pizza joint. very authentic, very trendy, great food, very reasonable price. i'm kind of a restaurant buff, the money that doesn't go into my car goes into discovering all of calgary's culinary gems

I think Calgary's restaurant scene has co tinted to develop. Time to revisit this thread. Any new and current favorites?

                        For me...
Alloy. It is tucked away on 42nd...a few blocks north of TuneDub. Food is ... Fusion? Beyond labels, it is great. I can't say much about the menu as I usually order the special, or do a tasting menu. We like it so much, we had them host our wedding.

Notable. Out of the core, lower rent = lower prices. Michael Noble is the chef/owner and was the chef at Catch when they opened. They are about local food, and sustainable farming. Good stuff.

if you like Italian food/wine go to a new restaurant called "Toscana Italian restaurant". I used to work there they have great food and its not stupidly over priced like some places

San Remo in Marda loop if you like a good Italian(& not the tasteless Americanised Italian you get at Olive garden). Ive been there quite a few times. Food has always been consistently good. The lobster Bisque soup is amazing...

Bankoknoi Thai Restaurant (Centre Street, 13th Ave, just before Transcanada) is a good place for Thai. Again has been consistent and good on price.

Sun's Bbq Restaurant, Centre Street North. Don't let the name put you off. Its a oriental place(Chinese), Im not a fan of chinese food in Calgary, but this place I DO LIKE. Food is really good and cheap. Lots of Asians eat there too so its a good sign.
