Okay, its easy to say "go for it now" but...

Importing an RS4 will start at $86,000
Importing a Cayman will start at around $68,000
        Importing a Z4M around $56,000 ?

Instead of paying off the car in 36 months (Cayman), I will be paying it off in 54 months (RS4)... If anyone wants to sell their car to give me the difference of $21,500 CAD including interest, I will gladly buy the RS4, and let you drive it once and a while, since I have no other way to get that much cash!

Anyway I do like the feedback. I'll have to drive both and see. I really am in love with the Porsche although it is merely standing in for the 911 in my fantasies I think. An M3 would be a cheap stand in for an RS4 but I would probably get bored with it fast and want to turbocharge it or something. The M-Coupe just doesn't flip my switches in terms of the style but maybe I will change my mind after the drive.

not sure that getting the porsche based on those thoughts is a good idea, you may get fed up with it quickly if you keep comparing it to a 911 those sort of things have a tendency to eat away at you.

To a large degree I agree with Kordain. If an MCoupe or Cayman are not "really" what you want... then wait until you can get what you want. Even if you have to wait until next summer to save a bit...... you'll be able to get exactly what you want.

Is everyone on here driving their dream car?!?

Come on, think realistically... I don't have a car now, at ALL so...

Everyone on here bought their Mk3 Mk4 Mk5 without thinking they would love a 911 if they could afford it?

                Life is compromises.

Dude, every since I have joined this site you have talked about "that day I get my porsche"... come on stick to it! I say go 2004 - 2005 used 911, then u don’t have to worry nearly as much about the depreciation

Haha I am starting to be sorry I started this thread.

Older 911 is not worth it, slower than the Cayman and still more dough! With an even worse interior and possible mechanical troubles. 996 turbo would be nice but also not in the cards this year due to $.

I test drove the M Coupe tonight, I will write up a review.

Hand down the Cayman. I love the shoe... but the Cayman is a fucking Porsche. The shoe is just a BMW.

Re: What would you buy and why?

I'm sure you have considered this, but I'll put it out there anyway...

You are going to spend $70,000 for the vehicle, which over 60 months of no interest payments comes to $1,166 per month. Let's call it $1200.

You also claim you are going to only drive the car about 5,000 km per year.

                        So $1200 * 12 = $14,400 per year or $2.88 per kilometer.

If after the 60 months is up you sell it and get 50% of your interest free money back (we all know it isn't going to be 0 interest, but it makes the numbers easier) then you will have paid $1.44 per kilometer before all other expenses.

I suppose if you drove slow you could enjoy it that much more.

Also, if you drove 5,000 km/year your warranty time would expire before the mileage limit. That seems like a waste.

If you are going to buy a vanity/toy car then for the love of god and money drive the freakin hell out of it. Enjoy it for what it is and what it was made for. Bearing that in mind the porsche seems like a much better car for driving the hell out of.

I would go buy a nice Passat and use the extra money to buy another house and take advantage of the rent situation (more than I already am) and get the investment to pay for the car I absolutely wanted when I didn't care about what it cost or what it was worth after I didn't drive it much for 5 years.

I'm not trying to jam on your dreams just putting them in a different light.

Re: What would you buy and why?

                          Neon:

I'm paying $55-70 for the vehicle but not all of that is borrowed money.Your calculations are way too high.

Also, why would I only get 50% back after selling a car with so few KM's on it after only a couple years? I think more like 90%, I am not necessarilly planning on driving the car new off of a dealership lot in Canada.

Driving the hell out of the car has nothing to do with distance. I might track it every weekend. How many kms will that be? :P But I don't have any desire to drive it to work and park it in Forrest Lawn every day.

Saying save for 5 years is easy but in 5 years, how likely am I to be in the position to own a sports car? I'm in my late 20's now, and still single. Hopefully that doesn't last forever In all reality, I will be more likely in 5 or 7 years to want to sell my sports car to buy that Passat, because I have more practical concerns. It happens.

I'm not really interested in becomming a landlord or renting out a property, I have too much on my mind already and just don't want the stress. I also would be more confident in buying real estate when prices were low (unlike now when they are extremely high).

I'm not really interested in waiting for my mid life crisis or retirement to buy car I am really going to enjoy. I got a new job this year and part of the reason I wanted to do that was to have more disposable income to enjoy life. After working for 3 years just to pay off houses and make my bills and all that, I am sick of it. Didn't take a vacation day in 2 years and been driving an '84 rabbit. Try it out and then you will see things from my perspective

Thanks for the advice but I am pretty set on picking up "the best car I can reasonably afford" and enjoying it for a few years. Then hopefully when I sell it I actually come out pretty close to even and can re-invest that money in my next ride down the road. There is nothing that says I can't sell the car sooner (like in 6 months) if I change my mind.

AHAHa good point. If it were me I would take the porsche. That thing is gorgous. I would take a boxter s and be happy net alone the caymen. Plus you said you were interested in picking up last years model. considering resale value is important to you buy the car that has already lost the most value in its first year....06 cayman..

My vote out of the 2. Better design than the 911 even if it is cheaper.

He's right though - I'm married and starting down the kids path. I would have loved to have a 2 seater/toy (other than my motorbike) but now that's on hold for the near future, at least until I have a 3 car garage. Just be aware you ARE going to lose money, and control how much you lose. I'd throw away an extra 200 a month to drive a 335 instead of an Accord for 3 years.
