Does anyone know what the rules are for people who have residences in both the US and Canada and who drive their US-registered / plated vehicle up here for extended periods of time? Specifically, is there a time limit that you are allowed to have a US registered car up in Canada? Do you need to return back to the states after a few months, or can you drive it up here indefinitely?

Re: Rules regarding out of country vehicles...
Anyone??...
The reason I'm asking is that I am going down to Vegas to get a Nevada driver's license and also to sign up for a credit card. I'm then going to use my friend's address on both the license and credit card as my US residence. (I also have US citizenship).
My plan is to buy an R32, get it plated and registered in Nevada and then drive it up here.
I just want to know if there are any rules in place that say I can only have an out of country-registered car in Canada for a certain period of time. Or can I have it up here indefinitely?2008 Audi RS4

DO IT!!! i don't know really chris.. maybe phone a registry and tell them your a US citizen and plan on working in calgary for 1-2 years and ask them if your car needs to be registered here.. if so register it after 6 months and if they complain its an R32 tell them to shove it and that you had no idea

Re: Rules regarding out of country vehicles...
From the Alberta Government (Look at the "I live in Florida" one):

Looks like the limit is 183 days.
If you get in an accident and they find out you live here your screwed though. Invalidates your insurance.Jeff

ya flyboy is right, my dad lives in florida and can only be here for a certain numbers of days and has to go back. but there might be some sort of loop hole or something like that. Might be worth hittin up vortex, but most likely you will get some stupid remarks.

I'll definitely have to do some more digging...
But if I have to head back down to the states every 180 days I could just take a trip down there for a long weekend and then come back ... then repeat every 180 days.
Right now it's just an idea, but I'm determined to make it work somehow.2008 Audi RS4

Re: Rules regarding out of country vehicles...
If you have dual citizenship why not try to "move" to the US, buy the car and then "move" back to Canada. You can register a US car in your possession if you move here, you just can't sell it to anyone in Canada until it hits the 15 year mark.
The only problem with my theory is that I think you have to have lived in the country for a certain amount of time and owned a car for a certain amount of time.
A friend of mine moved to mexico for a few years and then moved back to Canada. In that time they had bought a SEAT (the one that is based on the mk4 Jetta) and brought it back here and registered it. Totally legal unless you try to sell it.Jay

Re: Rules regarding out of country vehicles...
Moving to a different country carries pretty significant tax challenges. There are lots of crazy rules around ownership of property, handling of RRSP's, etc. Make sure to talk to an accountant before you do this.billip

Re: Rules regarding out of country vehicles...
all depends on your state insurance and their rules. Some are as little as 90 days some as much as 180. Do your research and dont lie about it or you will find your insurance void.Team Highschool

Re: Rules regarding out of country vehicles...
Is it one of those rebuilt titled R32's out of Quebec? Not sure if I want to go down that road... The ones that I have my eye on are all about $23K - $25K USD - I think the last rebuilt one I saw out of Quebec was like $38K CDN.
At any rate, I'm interested to hear what your friend has to offer.2008 Audi RS4

I've just been antsy the last little while and want to get into something new before I do get a Porsche in a couple of years. And I think an R32 would fit the bill quite nicely. There really isn't anything else out there in my price range that reaches into my trousers and gives me a squeeze.2008 Audi RS4
