  • Vehicle Insurance

So I just called to get a quote on insurance for my new TT and I have officially shat myself. I don't know if this is typical or not, but going from the A3 to the TT effectively DOUBLE's my premiums.

Does anyone else have experience buying a car worth about twice what the car you're replacing is worth? Did your premiums double?

I will be calling around to get quotes from other brokers. Does anyone have any suggestions as to who is good? Who do you use? How are the premiums? Have you made a claim, and if so, how did it go for you?

    Thanks!

its fairly normal and the TT is in a higher risk category both in tersm of engine and fewer doors.

Small hatch to a sports car. You always have to call for quotes before you buy a vehicle as the book rate can vary huge, even on models that you'd think should be the same. Guys buying STIs then discover that insurance is 4x normal, and many companies won't even insure the vehicle period. While an RX8 is rated a family sedan.

Yeah I did call about the premiums, but they had no idea because the car was so new it wasn't in their systems yet, so they gave me an estimate... which proved to be very wrong.

I just talked to them again and found that increasing the deductibles decreases the premium a lot. I had very low deductibles before, but I guess you need higher ones when you drive a more expensive car.

I'll still call around and get other quotes though.

Billip: I just went through this since I am shopping for a new car.

          1. Go to the registry and get a driver's abstract for yourself $20

          2. Call your insurance company and get them to fax/email you:
          - Your "Grid Level" rating
          - Your claim history with them

          3. With this information you'll be better armed to get the best quotes.

          4. Try www.kanetix.ca/auto-insurance

          5. Try your current insurance agency's online quote

          6. Choose the lowest one

I got estimates for changing my 02 Jetta to an 06 Cayman S and it wasn't double... it was more like a 45-50% increase.

              Good ideas, thanks guys.

I just tried TD's online quote dealy... and it was a little less than I was quoted from my agent, but not too much... probably not worth changing everything over. I think I will take it for now and re-evaluate when I've got some more time.

I might get a drivers abstract just because I'd be interested in what it has to say about me.

Canadiandirect and ING are supposed to be quite cheap. Sucks that the new version of the car is different than the old for rate scale, never thought about buying a car that has no book history.

Another way to save money is by having a winter car... you can put your TT on parking insurance for a few of the snowy months and pay almost nothing. Plus, you save the poor car from the harsh weather. I hope to do this and effectively pay half the insurance since I will only insure it for driving 5 months of the year.

It's an idea, and I know it works for some people (ie: you), but I bought this car to drive all year round. And I have no extra parking spot to park a second vehicle. :(

meloche monnex...if you have a good driving record you wont pay as much.

i worked in the autobody industry and know what its going to cost to fix my stuff, so i went for $1000 deductibles. If something less than that gets done it makes NO sense for me to go insurance anyway cause my rates will go through the roof. So if I'm going to claim im going to make it worth while...and therefore no need for low deductibles

                          Re: Vehicle Insurance

So after searching around today I've found that the rate I've been quoted from my agent is around where all the other rates are. I have adjusted my deductibles and that helps quite a bit. It kinda makes sense actually... when I moved from my 2003 GTI to the 2006 A3, my rates when down quite a bit even though the A3 was a more expensive car and was newer. So going back to a 2 door sports car means I must be a crazy boy racer who gets into accidents lots.

                          Thanks for your help.
