when i used to race we used moth balls mixed in with gas.
cheap way to boost octane.not recommended for fuel injected cars.
metal gas tanks and carb's only..Comment

I did it in my diesel and it seemed to smooth things out and mileage went up a wee...
HOWEVER...
It did do a wonderful job cleaning out the gunk in its 25 year old fuel tank and quickly turned the translucent fuel filter black with goo and varnish and other accumulation.
As an octane boost I keep a liter of methanol in my emergency kit - it also serves as my 'im running out of gas and am far away from a station' backup.Comment
