  • Re: Watches! Who wears em?

Really heavily considering getting another hand wound movement. I love waking up every morning and winding my watch... It's like a ritual. And it makes me feel more involved. It does kind of bother me that for the cost of a Panerai it's just a basic Unitas movement with some light decoration, no in house (unless you go auto, and the P9000 seems to be a nightmare). I loved the Cal 1861 in my speedy.

Was really wanting to get a crystal case back, it's mesmerizing and fun to watch your movement in action!

I ended up going for a submariner. Was playing with some Panerai's and while I think they look incredibly cool, I didn't enjoy them on my wrist. I decided to go with something classic that will probably outlast me! I wish I could have gotten a ceramic bezel, but the aluminium is quite nice too. I do have to say, I preferred the bracelet on my Omega quite a bit more, it felt solid.

      Hey, that's me haha!

I'm a collector as well and a big fan of horology. I mostly have vintage and eccentric pieces with some 'prized' pieces.

My Hamilton Pan-Europ with the Cal 11 movement, which is the first chronograph movemement in the world (disputed).

I say 'disputed' because there's a big argument between Heuer and Zenith and blah blah, don't care. Here it is with a bespoke strap:

Oh I'll play, I have a thing for Nixons, but plan to broaden my horizons for my next watch. Have a police watch as well.

and bought this one most recently at a silent auction fundraiser.

Think I am due for some classier watches.

I'm a G-Shock advocate as well. Maybe one day I will buy a nice watch but for now a digital display and it being pretty much bombproof is the best.
My brother is a big watch guru so I'll probably get some ideas from him.
IMO buying a $10,000 is pretty stupid though. I would probably draw the line at $1,500

Well not a fitness watch per-say but I have been wearing a Nike Fuelband for 2 years now (I still wear a watch too) but it does the Nike Fuel points, calories, steps and the time. Syncs via bluetooth (Apple only app) or USB which is also how it charges, and in my experience lasts between 2-4 weeks per charge and can be charged up in a couple hours.

Well I think it really depends on your income level, but you have to also remember there is always value in a nice watch, it might not always appreciate but if you want or need they can be sold or borrowed against so your money is not just poured down a drain.

It's also an appreciation for fine craftsmanship. Mechanical watches, especially with an inhouse movement, take a fair chunk of time to build, and are built by hand by very skilled people.

Evan, you could use the same argument saying "I don't think theres a reason to buy a car for over $10,000, because it's just a waste". $1500 will get you SFA in terms of a good mechanical watch. You'll end up with some cheap garbage movement that will blow apart in the same year, or a generic ETA (which is fine, they work great, but that isn't everyones cup of tea. And now days a lot of brands are marking a base ETA with light customization up to the 4-8K point, like Breitling).

Don't mock crafts just because you aren't knowledgeable towards them.

                                I'll look into suunto today.
